What’s been going on this summer?

A lot!  So let’s jump right in and share some of it with you.  We started the summer European tour on June 8th in Uzice, Serbia playing the InWires Music Festival.  What a wonderful town and great people we met there.

After Serbia it was off to Germany to play the Woodstock Festival.  Talk about a party?  These people really know how to throw one.  We meet our new friend Manfred who got us the Germany shows.

The it was off to Velden, Austria to visit our old friend Gudren at Bluesiana. This was our 4th time playing this cool little club and the hospitality is unbeatable.  Food is fantastic, friends are even better!

I mean, where else in the world is there a bowling alley in the dressing room?  We love Bluesiana! And the hotel on the lake?  Come on!!

Next it was off to the first show in Brescia, Italy!  Jazz On Live is a great venue for sure – but the food!  If you don’t have 2 hours to eat dinner you’re in trouble!  Many thanks to Guido Pelli for a great night.

After Brescia it was a day off in Biella, Italy where we got a change to do a little sightseeing and have a wonderful lunch with our host  Omar Trompeo of Kokio Live Club.

After Biella it was off to Treviso for the festival there.  What a crowd and our dear friend Arianna’s band was playing on the same bill with us.  Her band totally kicked ass!  We’re so lucky to have friends like her and she even sang a few songs with us each night.

After Treviso it was off to the final show in Papoze, Italy at Caruso Teatro.  What a great way to end our time in Europe with a nice outdoor show – and of course, the food!  It was an amazing time thanks to Mario Lodo and his staff.

Finally before we wrap up Europe we want to say a special thank you to a few of our friends.  First, Arianna and Giovanni for taking such good care of us.  Antea and Phil for all the support and help with directions and merchandise! Elena for being our roadie, sunshine and laughter and last but not least, to Noah for taking care of all the t-shirt and CD sales!

After a few weeks off when we returned from Europe, we headed out to Canada to play a few shows, the Windsor Blues Festival and the London Blues Festival. Great crowds and an all-around good time for everyone.  We were lucky to have Sophia Ramos sing with us on these shows and it’s always great when Ben Nieves is playing alongside Sam.

From Sam:

I am doing a large oil painting of Lisa Mills in Edinburgh from a photograph that she took while she was there.  I love the depth in the photo.  Instead of having her bandmembers in a line perpendicular to the camera, as is usually done, Lisa snapped everyone diagonal composition with the street and the people.  I want to learn this depth lesson in photography and painting, so this is a kind of extreme self education.

I’m also writing the history of Big Brother and the Holding Company in a series of blogs and am now at the year 2005.  Some of this history has been difficult to relive, but it is a healing to go through it again and have it make some kind of sense.  This cyberhistory of an almost fifty year old band has been an exorcism and a kind of summing up.  www.bbhc.com/samsblog

Our friend Michael Sporke, who wrote a book about Big Brtoher that I translated into English, is now working on a narrative about Big Mama Willie Mae Thornton and I am doing some translation and editing on that.  We received the song Ball & Chain from Big Mama, so she is one of our ancestors.  Michael’s story is interesting and wll make a good book.

Every day I play the blues all up and down the guitar neck and have been enjoying that.  A chance find on Kate Russo’s Facebook page has made me remember the scales that I did for years and I am revisiting them and remembering.  I have concentrated so much on arpeggios in the last years that I have neglected scale practice.  Here is what I found on Kate’s page that lead me back to scale practice.

From Peter:

Hanging out with Elena and Bob Sidemann at home. J

From Dave:

I’ve been busy teaching, playing music and marking art.  Teaching privately as well as at the Marin Community Music School in San Anselmo where I conducted a “Rhythm Workshop” in May.

When not touring with BBHC I have been playing with my singin wife’s group, the Joan Getz Quartet as well as with my other bands “The Buddas” and “Dave Getz & Friends Straight-Up Jazz”.

I recently had three pieces of my work in the Fine Art Pavillion at the Marin County Fair.  One of the pieces entitled “Boot Quilt” was awarded an Honorable Mention.

I am really thrilled about, and proud of, my daughter Liz’ new release under her showbiz name “Dezi Paige”.  The collection of 12 songs called “Tall Tales” is available for FREE download at www.dezipaige.com

Joan & I are currently relaxing in Hawaii for a few days and then it’s back to BBHC touring to the East Coast when I return.

Lastly, do you have web design experience and would love the world to know it? Are you short on cash but really want to see a show coming to your area or maybe you just want some free band merchandise? We’d love to find someone that wants to redo our website (www.bbhc.com) to a modern and easy to use (for us and the fans) version in exchange for show tickets or merchandise from our e-store. We are looking for a revamp of our site and if this is something you are interested in please let us know at genxinc@aol.com or donna@bbhc.com.
