Sam is working on a blog about the history of tools, techniques and technology. “This is very absorbing,” he notes, “and I can’t believe that I am lucky enough still to be learning so much at my advanced age. This is truly a gift from the universe and I am thankful.” Otherwise, Sam is preparing for the band’s engagement in Sonoma on 20 April. “Sonoma is the birthplace of California. I did an interview with Ken Brown, the present mayor, who is a member of the Bear Flag party. This was the first flag of California and Sonoma was the first capital, so it is really a privilege to be playing in Sonoma at the historic Sebastiani Theatre. I can’t wait.” Sam Andrew, April 2013
In March I finally completed a small stick & tissue model of a 1916 Nieuport 11, a famous French biplane. It was quite a challenge and it still needs more details. I’ve been building model airplanes since I was 13 and I love anything and everything about aviation. I have just started working on a new model, Charles Lindberg’s “Spirit of St. Louis.” When I’m on the road I try to visit air museums. In March I took some time off to visit Disneyland with my daughters and my granddaughter. This month I will be playing with the Barry Melton Band at the infamous Saloon on Grant Avenue in San Francisco on April 13th and I will also be playing with Big Brother at the Sebastiani Theatre in Sonoma, CA on April 20th. Peter Albin, April 2013
Peter will also be on a Q & A panel on Monday April 15th in San Rafael, CA for the just release documentary “The Cover Story – Album Art”
THE COVER STORY-ALBUM ART
Filmmaker Eric Christensen in Person
Monday, April 15, 7:00 pm
Marin-based filmmaker Eric Christensen (The Trips Festival) will present and discuss his new documentary about the lost art of album cover design. Interviewing dozens of photographers, visual artists and prominent musicians, the film tells some of the stories behind the most iconic album covers from the 12-inch LP era, while it also traces the evolution of music packaging from 78s to LPs to CDs and digital downloads. Highlights include the first on-camera interview with the woman who, at age 11, posed for Bob Seidemann’s controversial Blind Faith cover, and also with Spencer Elden, who was the infant photographed for Nirvana’s Nevermind. Director: Eric Christensen. (US 2013) 111 min.
I have a busy month of music April. Along with Big Brother’s show on April 20 I will be joining with Peter Albin, Barry Melton and that gang of ‘Dinosaurs’ to play the Saloon in North Beach on April 13. I’ll also be appearing with my jazz quartet “Straight-Up’ at The Sleeping Lady in Fairfax on April 21st. also a couple of gigs with The Joan Getz (my wife) Quartet at Osteria DiVino in Sausalito and The Panama Hotel in San Rafael.
I’m also working like a madman to prepare for a showing of my art at the Fairfax library (my home town) in May. the show will be titled “Dave Getz, Paper Inlay Pieces, 1981-1987”. Hoping to get a postcard out with a picture of one of the pieces in the show, also there will be announcements on Facebook and other websites.
Lastly, I’m getting more of my handmade practice drum-pads out in the world and the response to them has been incredible. The ‘Dave Getz, Lo-Tech, Hollow-Body, Pock-it, Practice Padz are going to be something that both drummers and functional-art lovers will enjoy. Hope you will check out some of the pictures on www.BBHC.com and soon on www.Davegetz.com.
