Greg Shirley

Greg Shirley has been surrounded by music as long as he can remember.
His father, a brick mason, chased the sunshine along the coast from Texas to the Carolinas. On open roads and in balmy beach towns, Greg absorbed the restless sound of American radio: the drifting freedom of country and western, the tradition and heritage of folk music, the youthful celebration of top 40 rock and roll.
But radio wasn’t his only influence. Greg’s mother was a folk guitarist and his father sang southern gospel. Music filled each new home in each new town.
Following his mother’s death, Greg and his father ended their rambling and settled in Birmingham, Alabama. It was here that he first picked up his own guitar. He quickly developed into a strong player and vocalist, fronting his own bands and performing on stages throughout the Birmingham area. But it wasn’t long before the road started calling again. Now a husband and a father, Greg and his family left the Magic City for the Music City.

In Nashville, Greg worked days as a brick mason and nights under the spotlights of fabled Music Row venues. He started writing songs. He became a demo singer at the Western Room on Printer’s Alley and worked in studios throughout Nashville. Then came recording projects. Session work. Live gigs. After years of successes and struggles in country music’s capital, Greg found himself at a crossroads. His family needed stability and his father was ill. Music was his life, but Alabama was his home.

Moving his family to Tuscaloosa, Greg became the owner and president of a commercial masonry company. He and his wife of 20 years have raised five children here, and he still surrounds himself with music. Following his father’s example, Greg began singing with a southern gospel group and soon expanded his musical resume to bluegrass and contemporary Christian music. He continues to write and perform in acoustic venues, festivals, and rallies in the Birmingham – Tuscaloosa area.

Greg’s first album will be released this spring. Raised on the Run is comprised of both original material and new classics by Nashville’s most celebrated songwriters, and it’s a long time coming. Brick by brick, town by town, and note by note, he’s been living these songs all his life.
