Bill McBirnie is a Canadian jazz and Latin flute specialist whose extraordinary level of skill prompted a personal solicitation from classical flute legend, Sir James Galway, to serve as the resident Jazz Flute Specialist at Sir James official web site.

Although Bill is known for his outstanding technique, he is also recognized as an exceptional improviser in the bebop, swing and Latin idioms as demonstrated by numerous recordings as a sideman with the likes
of Junior Mance, Irakere, Memo Acevedo, Four80East and Emilie-Claire Barlow. He is also a longstanding charter member of the Moe Koffman Tribute Band.

Find Your Place

Consummate Canadian jazz and Latin flutist, Bill McBirnie, has released a new album (his sixth) which departs, in a significant way, from all three of his previously acclaimed acoustic jazz projects (Mercy with Robi Botos; Paco Paco with Bernie Senensky; and Nature Boy with Mark Eisenman). On Find Your Place, Bill has placed the flute in a very unlikely setting—as part of an organ trio!For this singular format, Bill has recruited two outstanding fellow Canadian musicians—Bernie Senensky on Hammond B3 organ and Anthony Michelli on drums. As Bill scintillates on the flute, Bernie delivers a distinctly Larry Young kind of “edge” on the organ while Anthony provides nonstop “snap, crackle and pop” on the drums. Find Your Place showcases a broad scope of material ranging from modal (“Yes Or No”), to Latin (“Soy Califa”), to gospel (“Yes Indeed!”, for Sir James Galway) right on through to a Beatles’ classic (“Oh! Darling”). Concluding this more standard fare on the album is the title track, “Find Your Place”, an original written by Bill and dedicated to his wife, Svetlana.In keeping with Bill’s most recent acoustic jazz projects, Find Your Place combines a clear acoustic sonority with the raw authenticity of a blowing session, resulting in an album with “drop-the-needle-anywhere” presence and charm.The origins of this unusual organ trio project came about at the recording session for one of Bill’s previous albums, Paco Paco, which also featured Bernie Senensky, but who played piano on that prior occasion. As fate would have it, upon arrival at the studio for the Paco Paco recording, Bernie detected a Hammond B3 organ in the corner and, given his known enthusiasm for—as well as prowess on—that instrument, Bernie was excited at the prospect of perhaps playing organ on the Paco Paco session. However, the piano was set up, miked and ready to go—whereas the organ was not. So, after pleading with Bernie (and, as Bill put it, ”virtually having to pry both his arms and his fingers from around the Leslie cabinet”), Bill was finally able to placate him by promising to let Bernie play the organ…on another occasion!…With the release of Find Your Place, that occasion has arrived!This unique organ trio format is also distinguished by the presence of drummer, Anthony Michelli, for whom Bill has been a longstanding advocate because of his remarkable skill, versatility and musicianship. So now, with all three members of this singular trio combined, they present their fresh – and entirely musical – takes on:

Saxophonist Tyrone Birkett has synthesized his mentorship by jazz greats Frank Foster and Budd Johnson, years toiling in black church sanctuaries and 70s soul-jazz into a distinctive fusion. An “outsider” artist not common to the jazz scene, not considering himself a jazz musician in the strictest sense, he has nonetheless developed a powerful lyrical sound with shades of post-Coltraneisms, jazz sensibilities and an idiosyncratic but musical melodic sense. A composer and conceptualist as well, he has created “Postmodern Spirituals”, a retelling of the Negro freedom song. Created as a voice for freedom in contemporary times, by re-imagining and reviving the Negro spiritual.Postmodern Spirituals: The Promised Land is the first presentation of the Postmodern Spiritual concept, featuring saxophonist Tyrone Birkett with vivid compositions that vary from the funk-driven epic “The Departure”, commencing with a bold declaration, an overture of sorts for the project. Vocalist Paula Ralph-Birkett gives the statement of purpose which flows into a sax solo that “preaches the message”. Other selections range from a re-imagining of the Negro Spiritual “Motherless Child’ revived by a soulful vocal rendition, funky underpinning and new arrangement, “Strength” with a determined vocal delivery by Paula Ralph-Birkett and a unyielding sax solo by Tyrone Birkett.Then a modern re-creation of a slave’s sorrow song, the heartfelt ballad “Deep River”, (which is heard in the 1929 film version of “Showboat”); the impressionistic “Freedom Dreaming” ; ending with the haunting “The Promise” with a melody inspired by Wayne Shorter featuring a passionate solo by bassist John Benitez, round out the album.Together these songs suggest a revitalizing of the classic “CTI” sound with its blending of soulful sophistication, added by a rich and imaginative harmonic palette and curious usage of form.
The message of the music is translated through the lyrics and melody that can be described as “neo-folk” in its character underpinned at times by modernistic
harmonic structures. Presented with a versatile and able cast of musicians, this recording promotes the notion of freedom in word and deed, style and substance.“Postmodern Spirituals: The Promised Land”, Freedom Music for the 21st century.

Charlie Dennard “From Brazil to New Orleans” ((Deneaux Music)) Street Date: May 6, 2014

At its best, the concept of fusion is combining specific elements to form an entity that is completely new, but fully respectful of its origins.  This concept is defined to perfection with Charlie Dennard’s enthralling new album From Brazil to New Orleans.
Both New Orleans and Brazil represent the very essence of fusion in that both musical cultures have combined a wide palette of sources to create two of the most distinctive forms of music.  The imaginative keyboardist/composer/arranger has forged the album’s concept by paying tribute to several under-recognized Brazilian composers, placing them squarely in the heart of New Orleans’ multi-cultural landscape.  The intention is to take the listener on a world-wide journey – a mission that is most impressively accomplished.
Dennard is thoroughly equipped to pilot this excursion with a depth of experience that takes him from classical orchestras to performing with major artists in jazz, blues, funk and the entire breadth of the New Orleans sound, to being musical director of Cirque de Soleil’s touring production ofTotem.  He explains his intentions for this album in straightforward terms:  “My main goal is to make beautiful music that feels good and is emotional.  To me, the music of Brazil and New Orleans have all of that and more, so it just seems logical for me to put them together in one big gumbo and ‘stir the pot’ so to speak…”
That pot – brimming with a marvelously compelling and heady concoction – provides a sumptuous feast of aural delights that defy categorization but remain delectably familiar.  Celebratory horns; Brazilian, African, Latin and second-line funky rhythms; masterful jazz ensemble improvisation; and Dennard’s full command of acoustic and electric keyboards are all brewed together with the addition of some unusually piquant spicing.  Plaintive cello, bansuri flute, dulcet bass clarinet, wisps of accordion, a unison line with a recorder, a heavenly Afro-Brazilian vocal and ambient electronics are added as special touches. Together it all produces a rich, almost cinematic narrative that is fully cohesive and utterly uncontrived.
Dennard has assembled a superb international cast of 20 musicians to fulfill his vision – mostly from New Orleans, but also from such far-flung places as Brazil, London, Lebanon, Germany and New York City.  From a filigreed piano/cello duet to a sprawling 10-piece ensemble – and all sizes in between – the ensemble is structured to ideally convey the story contained in each composition through Dennard’s exceptional arrangements. And the pieces don’t fall into genre categories.  There isn’t a brass band item or a Nevilles-type song or a samba with a second-line drummer.  Instead these elements are all woven into the mix, sometimes as a hint of color, others in full bloom and occasionally in a stunningly unexpected blend – and while no two tracks are even similar, the continuity is totally fluid.
Three pieces have large four to six horn ensembles, built around trumpeter Eric Lucero, trombonist Rick Trolsen and multi-reedmen Ray Moore and Brent Rose; in places augmented by Matt Perrine’s tuba, Jason Mingledorf’s bass clarinet and Josh Geisler on bansuri flute.
The groove on Capoeira Mata Um is a hybrid of a New Orleans 2nd line and Boogaloo with five horns joyfully dancing over second-line drumming.  The horn lines are built around the bass clarinet, creating a uniquely rich texture and evoking not only the traditional brass band sound, but African highlife, Afro-Cuban son and even a touch of Fela.  Emerging from this rich sonic palette are sparkling solos by Dennard on B3 and drummer Doug Belote.
Asa Branca is an atmospheric, highly evocative piece ushered in by Geisler’s bansuri flute.  The time flows freely like thick honey with solo statements shining through the slowly shifting shroud of sound like lights appearing through a warm mist.  Dennard’s beautifully-structured darkly lustrous solo is the centerpiece.
Quando o Galo Cantar is a jubilant foray of lavish horn lines over pulsing tuba, sizzling second-line drumming and scintillating percussion.  Though a New Orleans brass band is at its core, the feeling of the African and Indian Brass Bands, Gangbe and Jaipur Kawa, are also evoked in the mix.
At the other end of the spectrum, Senhorinha is an exquisite, deeply moving ballad for Dennard’s acoustic piano and cellist Jack Craft, with Dennard’s elegant solo enhanced by Craft’s warm resonance.
Daring suspension of rhythm never undermines the soul-jazz core of Valsa Luisiana, a Dennard original. With guitarist Brian Seeger in a delicious Grant Green mode, Dennard’s deliberate, darkly funkified Fender Rhodes, Tommy Sciple’s soulful bass and Belote’s brilliant drumming, the quartet audaciously deconstructs the time and slices it into bite-sized pieces.
Another quartet in a more up-tempo funky feel makes Africa Mae a fascinating ride.  With Dennard on B3, this Afro-Brazilian composition explores the territory that Larry Young brought to the jazz organ – a robustly adventurous piece with boldly swinging Dennard and brilliant support by Scott Myers on guitar, stoked by the fiery rhythms of Belote and percussionist Billy Hulting.
Josh Geisler’s bansuri flute is also highlighted on Dennard’s Itape, a briskly cooking piece built on Sciple’s powerful bass ostinato.  Fluid flute and rhythmic piano solos lead into a vividly syncopated piano/bass unison line over Belote’s spirited drumming to close out this dynamic piece.
Abrindo a Porta shifts from soothing serenity to virile energy as rubato segments alternate with driving rhythms, and Craft’s euphonious cello voicings adding opulent color.
This remarkable album closes on a most exotic note with Ganga Zumbi.  The Afro-Brazilian style features lyrics in a mixture of Yoruba and Portuguese, beautifully sung by Tatiana Parra.  Her radiantly sonorous voice melds with Dennard’s synthesizer and programming, Steve Masakowski’s 7-string acoustic guitar, Brent Rose’s sinuous soprano sax and flute, and the swirling percussion of Belote and James Mack to create a luminous and stirring finale to this extraordinary musical experience.
Charlie Dennard has not only created a masterpiece, he’s forged into a new genre.

Bria Skonberg Quartet featuring Tia Fuller and Nicki Parrott
When Newport Jazz Festival founder George Wein first heard Skonberg, he recalled, “I could not believe what I heard. She is very special.”
Triple threat bandleader BRIA SKONBERG will be showcasing her trumpet, vocal and compositional talents at the Mayo Performing Arts Center on Sunday March 30th.  In 2013 she earned a Jazz Journalists’ Association nomination for “Up and Coming Jazz Artist of The Year” and is included in DOWNBEAT Magazine’s Rising Star Critics‘ Poll. She has recently been honored with a New York Bistro Award for “Outstanding Jazz Artist”.  Best known for her knowledge of classic jazz and instigative nature, she is creating an adventurous style rooted in New Orleans jazz and blues, pop, soul and cabaret. One review states, “I was kind of thinking Norah Jones, Diana Krall but with a dose of the bubbly.”
Dynamic saxophonist TIA FULLER has been featured in Jazz Improv Magazine, Rocky Mountain News, The Philadelphia Tribune, The Star Ledger, Downbeat Magazine and many other print and online publications for her vast work as a musical director and solo artist.  She has released four albums under her own name and topped the 2013 Downbeat Critics’ Rising Star for both Alto Saxophone and Flute. Fuller is part of the all-female band that backs up Beyonce and works regularly with Grammy-award winning bassist Esperanza Spalding. She is well known in the New York scene having played with a number of bands, including the T.S. Monk Septet, the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, the Rufus Reid Septet, the Sean Jones Quintet, the Nancy Wilson Jazz Orchestra, and Wycliffe Gordon Septet.
Skonberg and Fuller met in the horn sections of big bands led by jazz luminaries Nicholas Payton, Wycliffe Gordon and Terri-Lynn Carrington. This will be their first time collaborating as headlining artists which Skonberg says will be “a blending of styles and personalities from different backgrounds.This will be our first time playing in a small band setting, and with that comes the unfiltered trading of ideas. We’ll both be sharing original songs among more familiar numbers, and in recognition of Women’s History Month we’ll be highlighting female artists from Valaida Snow to Joni Mitchell and everything in between. It’ll be fun!!”
 Also featured in the quartet will be a special guest, bassist/vocalist Nicki Parrott, who played bass with the late guitarist Les Paul’s regular Monday night band at the Iridium in New York. Paul was impressed by Parrott’s vocal talents, and, according to NPR Music’s Grant Jackson, “she’s emerged as a fine singer and award-winning composer who’s recorded several of her own albums and appeared on dozens of records by other artists.”    The rest of the band will include two members of Skonberg’s regular group, pianist Dalton Ridenhour and drummer Darrian Douglas.
