Powerhouse Women in Jazz
Bria Skonberg Quartet featuring Tia Fuller and Nicki Parrott
When Newport Jazz Festival founder George Wein first heard Skonberg, he recalled, “I could not believe what I heard. She is very special.”
Triple threat bandleader BRIA SKONBERG will be showcasing her trumpet, vocal and compositional talents at the Mayo Performing Arts Center on Sunday March 30th.  In 2013 she earned a Jazz Journalists’ Association nomination for “Up and Coming Jazz Artist of The Year” and is included in DOWNBEAT Magazine’s Rising Star Critics‘ Poll. She has recently been honored with a New York Bistro Award for “Outstanding Jazz Artist”.  Best known for her knowledge of classic jazz and instigative nature, she is creating an adventurous style rooted in New Orleans jazz and blues, pop, soul and cabaret. One review states, “I was kind of thinking Norah Jones, Diana Krall but with a dose of the bubbly.”
Dynamic saxophonist TIA FULLER has been featured in Jazz Improv Magazine, Rocky Mountain News, The Philadelphia Tribune, The Star Ledger, Downbeat Magazine and many other print and online publications for her vast work as a musical director and solo artist.  She has released four albums under her own name and topped the 2013 Downbeat Critics’ Rising Star for both Alto Saxophone and Flute. Fuller is part of the all-female band that backs up Beyonce and works regularly with Grammy-award winning bassist Esperanza Spalding. She is well known in the New York scene having played with a number of bands, including the T.S. Monk Septet, the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, the Rufus Reid Septet, the Sean Jones Quintet, the Nancy Wilson Jazz Orchestra, and Wycliffe Gordon Septet.
Skonberg and Fuller met in the horn sections of big bands led by jazz luminaries Nicholas Payton, Wycliffe Gordon and Terri-Lynn Carrington. This will be their first time collaborating as headlining artists which Skonberg says will be “a blending of styles and personalities from different backgrounds. This will be our first time playing in a small band setting, and with that comes the unfiltered trading of ideas. We’ll both be sharing original songs among more familiar numbers, and in recognition of Women’s History Month we’ll be highlighting female artists from Valaida Snow to Joni Mitchell and everything in between. It’ll be fun!!”
Also featured in the quartet will be a special guest, bassist/vocalist Nicki Parrott, who played bass with the late guitarist Les Paul’s regular Monday night band at the Iridium in New York. Paul was impressed by Parrott’s vocal talents, and, according to NPR Music’s Grant Jackson, “she’s emerged as a fine singer and award-winning composer who’s recorded several of her own albums and appeared on dozens of records by other artists.”    The rest of the band will include two members of Skonberg’s regular group, pianist Dalton Ridenhour and drummer Darrian Douglas.

“Stryker’s recordings are always hardy and reliable projects, but all of the stars line up for Eight Track. It has a perfect appeal to the middle to late Baby Boomers who came of age listening to this music. And we all know that is the best music ever produced.”

C. Michael Bailey / All About Jazz
“A sure fingered, behind the scenes MVP, Stryker should connect here with jazz stations looking to broaden their audiences who will subsequently spread the word.  Tasty stuff that avoids every pitfall imaginable, even when backing up Bread with Pink Floyd.  Solid, jumping stuff throughout.”
Chris Spector – Midwest Record
“No pretense or posturing on this one. Stryker’s Eight Track is just straight up fun.”

Whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 25 CD’s as a leader to date), co-leading The Stryker/Slagle Band, Blue To The Bone or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.”
Dave Stryker was voted once again into the 2013 Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls. Besides his own 25 recordings Stryker has appeared as a sideman or producer on over 100 others. As a composer he has recorded and published over 130 original compositions. He is involved in passing it on, and was recently hired as the new Jazz Guitar instructor at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

“As a vocalist, Perry Beekman can hold his own with any of his contemporaries. As a guitarist, Perry adds a bit of the New York panache that elevates these classics to a new rarefied level of excellence… Perry Beekman raises his game and with that moves to the very top of the pack in the traditional jazz setting. Bewitched is about as close to perfect as you can find.” -Brent Black Critical Jazz
Guitarist, vocalist Perry Beekman is pleased to announce his new project, “Bewitched: Perry Beekman Sings and Plays Rodgers and Hart” @ The Metropolitan Room Friday, March 28th 9:30 PM.
“Bewitched” is the follow up to Perry’s 2013 debut release “So in Love: Perry Beekman  Sings And Plays Cole Porter.” Here’s what Perry has to say about his new project:

The collaboration of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart was an unlikely one. Rodgers was organized and businesslike, while Hart was a notoriously unreliable alcoholic. Yet in spite of their divergent personalities, their collaboration produced some of the most beloved entries in the Great American Songbook. I leave it to their contemporaries to elaborate further:

Tuneful and tasty, schmaltzy and smart.
Music by Rodgers, lyrics by Hart.”
– Irving Berlin

It’s smooth! It’s smart! It’s Rodgers! It’s Hart!” – Cole Porter

The meticulously crafted music of Rodgers combined with Hart’s dazzling lyrics to produce over five hundred songs, populating twenty-eight theatrical productions and nine movies. This recording contains fifteen of my favorites, and I hope some of yours too.

The music on this CD is a combination of carefully planned, well-rehearsed arrangements, along with some good old fashioned “blowing.” (As we jazz folk like to call improvisation.) My goal has been to create a setting for each tune that helps express its essential nature. Here are some examples of what I mean:

– The enormously clever lyrical phrases of “I Wish I Were in Love Again” come one after another at an alarming rate. They have a percussive quality that led me to the vamp style introduction and accompaniment of the arrangement. In the instrumental break, I tried to mimic the phrasing musically with the guitar and piano.

– I find the melody of “Wait Till You See Her” to be extremely powerful in its simple beauty. So, for the instrumental section, I decided to showcase the melody with Lou’s artful bowing over a re-harmonized background provided by Peter and myself.

– I selected the bare bones guitar/voice treatment of “It Never Entered My Mind” to enhance the quality of the song’s deeply personal reckoning of love gone wrong.

– My semi-classical, instrumental treatment of “Blue Room” was inspired by the carefully measured intervallic steps of its melody. I envisioned the arrangement as collaboration between Richard Rodgers and J.S. Bach!

As I continue to explore the guitar, piano, bass trio format, new possibilities manifest themselves. I’ve come to think of my trio as a little big band, and have been trying to expand the palette of musical textures and colors available to explore the great beauty of the timeless classics that we play. (Including, but not limited to using my guitar as a bongo drum!)

Still, let there be no mistake; our goals here are to share the bountiful riches of the extraordinary Rodgers and Hart, swing hard, and to get you tapping your feet and smiling.

Once again, I have the privilege of recording with my working trio, featuring Peter Tomlinson on piano and Lou Pappas on bass. As always, I am greatly indebted to them for their inestimable contributions and commitment.

I am “Bewitched” with this music. I hope that you will be too.

GUITARIST NOSHIR MODY RELEASES STORIES FROM THE YEARS OF LIVING PASSIONATELY,
A LYRICAL AND ORIGINAL SET OF THOUGHTFUL MODERN JAZZ

Throughout his career, guitarist Noshir Mody has recorded consistently rewarding and thought-provoking sets of original music. His recent Stories From The Years Of Living Passionately features five of his sophisticated compositions performed by a quintet also including Tsuyoshi Niwa on soprano, pianist Carmen Staaf, bassist John Lenis and drummer Yutaka Uchida.

On Stories From The Years Of Living Passionately, the musicians stretch out on the songs, with only one piece being under 11 minutes long, yet they make every moment count. Their performances are as colorful as the song titles which include “The Next Chapter,” “India,” and “A Pearl Discovers The Oyster.” Mody’s guitar playing, while occasionally recalling Gabor Szabo and Pat Metheny, is quite distinctive, thoughtful and unpredictable. Niwa and Staaf also have plenty of solo space and the high quality of the improvisations and the grooves always hold on to one’s attention. Whether it is the peaceful but danceable “To Be In Your Thoughts,” the pretty melody of “Beckoned By Mercury” or the 5/4 groove of “A Pearl Discovers The Oyster,” every selection on this CD will be of strong interest to modern jazz fans. The music brings out the best in the musicians and vice versa, resulting in a particularly memorable set.

Born and raised in Bombay, India, Noshir Mody was self-taught on guitar. He had an original and unique conception to playing jazz from the start. His early inspirations included Indian classical music, Al Di Meola’s Elegant Gypsy, music from Bollywood, rock and the modern jazz guitar masters. Mody immersed himself in jazz after moving to New York in 1995, leading his own trio in clubs. His eclectic and open-minded approach to music was well showcased in his groups the EthniFusion Rock Ensemble and the EthniFusion Jazz Ensemble.

Noshir Mody’s solo guitar recording In This World With You and his trio set Union Of Hearts displayed both his memorable originals and his impressionistic playing. Now with the release of Stories From The Years Of Living Passionately, a project that features his compositions interpreted by a top-notch quintet, Noshir Mody’s musical vision is fully realized.
