Week of December 10th to 16th Birthdays Birthdays Birthdays Blues Highlights Lightnin' Hopkins Born in Centerville, Texas, on March 15, 1912, Sam Hopkins knew from a young age that he was born to play the blues. When he was 8, he met the blues legend, Blind Lemon Jefferson at a church picnic and would go onto accompany the bluesman at future gatherings. While he learned a great deal from Jefferson, he was also taught to play guitar from his distant cousin, Alger “Texas” Alexander, with whom he would later perform with. In the mid 30’s, Hopkins found himself in the Houston County Prison Farm. After his release, he and “Texas” Alexander moved to Houston to unsuccessfully attempt to break into the music scene, and would move back to Centerville.

Hopkins would return to Houston, where he would be discovered by Lola Anne Cullum from Aladdin Records in 1946. Cullum convinced Hopkins to move out to Los Angeles along with pianist Wilson Smith, where the duo recorded 12 tracks for Aladdin. It was at this time that he was given his nickname, and would perform from then on out as Lightnin’ Hopkins. Read More…
