Quick note from Dr. Boyce: I would like to mention that I am in support of the economicboycott against the state of Florida that is being called for by Dr. Ron Daniels and the Institute of the Black World 21st Century. Tragedies like the one that took place last week are indicative of what is happening to our people in the criminal justice system, and as a person who teaches Finance, I can tell you that the greatest way to resolve the race problem in America is to pursue various forms of economic unity.
Additionally, I hope you will keep in tune with the case of Gabriella Calhoun, the 18-year old honor student who had her teeth knocked out by the police. Gabriella has never even been put on detention in high school, where she graduated a semester early to begin college, where she has a 4.0 GPA. Her mother says that she’s never even been in a fight, which contrasts strongly with the police claim that Gabriella assaulted them and deserves to be sent to prison for no less than five years. Gabriella says that the officer knocked her teeth out, beat her in the face with a baton, and said “I don’t care if you have asthma” when she asked the officer to stop choking her. She and several witnesses also claim that Gabby was forced to walk across a crowded restaurant with her upper body exposed because she was in handcuffs and the officer refused to pull up her shirt.
I’ve been in contact with Gabriella’s family almost every day, and they are in fear of retaliation from the Bloomington, Illinois Police Department. Since our social justice coordinator, Yolanda Spivey, wrote about the case, we’ve received several emails from people who claim that the police there have a reputation for using excessive force, particularly against African Americans. I can’t be there for every case like this around the country (honestly, it’s expensive and we don’t have much funding – I also can’t take money from anyone seeking to control our platform), but we must do what we can, when we can. Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated, especially if you can help the family get a strong attorney – feel free to email organize@yourblackworld.net to offer any resources you can provide.
If you want to hear Gabby’s story, in her own words, you can visit this link.
Our children must be protected from those who seek to destroy them. We must not allow oppressive forces to build economic engines that feed on the demise of our young people. No justice, no peace, no compromise.
Until we meet again, please stay strong, be blessed and be educated.
Sincerely,
Dr. Boyce Watkins
