CD Concept:

This fourth recording by Philadelphia based John Vanore & Abstract Truth further defines the singular voice of this large ensemble—a

leader in the movement in jazz that is redefining the big band. CULTURE presents this uniquely instrumented ensemble’s original point of

view where the solo voice is prominent, if not dominant. The ensemble draws on the traditions of the big band, but is neither limited

by nor imitates it.
Bio:

Composer and trumpeter John Vanore has created a unique 12 member ensemble: Abstract Truth. As a Woody Herman alumnus and

a student of Dennis Sandole, John has merged the intimacy and unique voice of the soloist with the power of the big band. The music

is story-like and thematic—soloists are many and original compostion creates their landscape. The “Truth“ has had a long and rich

history in two iterations. Formed in the 80s, its first two releases, Blue Route andCuriosty, were recognized in the Downbeat Reader’s

Poll as Album of the Year worthy. The band itself and Mr. Vanore as composer also received Downbeat placement in multiple years.

After a several year hiatus, 2009 saw the reforming of the ensemble around five of its veteran members. Contagious Words was the

first product of the new ensemble and strongly established the group’s return with frequent national and international radio plays and

reviews. The latest release, Culture, further defines the group’s position as a leader among large ensembles in jazz today.
What they’re saying:
“ Vanore’s compositions sneak up as a slow burn, yielding all kinds of surprises…his trumpet accentuates his pristine melodic sense.”

—Aaron Cohen, Downbeat Magazine
“ Ambitious writing and arranging for the 12 piece ensemble by the Philly-based trumpeter. Hauntingly beautifully–well crafted—stirring

orchestrations…edgy…swinging.” —Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times

“ …their sheer excellence exemplifies creativity in compostion and craftsmanship in the art of arranging…this music is rooted in its

heritage while boldly looking forward.” —Thomas Conrad, CD Review
“ Trumpeter John Vanore projects a cooly assured sound with his pocket big band. Vanore continues to mine a stylish Gil Evans vibe…

realms of coolness, without failing to communicate.” —Karl Stark, Philadelphia Inquirer
