After 57 years of playing the blues,B.B. Kingembarked on a farewell tour of Europe, starting onMarch 29, 2006, in Sheffield, England. In 1949, King began a career in the blues that would see him forever alter the genre he loves so much. In the decades that have followed, he would earn himself the title of “King of the Blues” for his monumental contributions to the music of the blues. He is heralded as the most important electric guitarist this side of the 1950’s, and his signature style has had an unquestionable influence on guitar players throughout the world. William Christopher Handy

On March 28, 1958,W.C. Handy, the man known as “The Father of the Blues”, died of bronchial pneumonia at the age of 84. William Christopher Handy showcased a love for music from an early age as he learned to play the cornet, guitar and organ. From his early twenties, Handy taught music from time to time and performed in minstrel shows and bands, such as Lauzetta Quartet (which he organized). He traversed the Midwest and southern areas of the United States and studied and documented various forms of African-American popular music. While in the Mississippi Delta, Handy can across a man singing and playing the guitar with a pocket knife, which he described as “the weirdest music I have ever heard”.
