Blues Highlights: A Brother Lost...

October 29, 1971, saw the tragic passing of The Allman Brothers Band lead and slide guitarist and co-founder, Howard Duane Allman. The guitarist was involved in a motorcycle accident, from which he received wounds that would ultimately prove fatal, despite emergency surgery. Allman first found success as a session guitar, making a name for himself working with such musicians as Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Rush. In March of 1969, Duane, along with his brother Gregg, Butch Trucks, Jaimoe Johnson, Dickey Betts, and Berry Oakley, came together to form the southern and blues-rock group, The Allman Brothers Band. Duane Allman would record two studio albums with the band, their self-titled debut and Idlewild South, before the release of their breakthrough record, At the Fillmore East. The classic, live double album was a critical and commercial success, featuring stand out Allman Brothers originals such as“Hot Lanta”,“Whipping Post”, and“In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”, as well as celebrated covers of

Former heavyweight championMuhammad Ali visits beloved blues and soul singer Etta James at the Kinshasa Hotel in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) on September 22, 1974. Etta James joined James Brown, B.B. King and a number of other popular African-American performers, as well as prominent African musicians, for the three-day music festival Zaire 74. The festival was set up as a means of promotion for Ali’s fight against reigning heavyweight champion, George Foreman, a historic boxing match billed as The Rumble in the Jungle.
