Sehr geehrter M. BELLANGER, We warmly invite you to the presentation of volumes 1 to 8 of the documentation “Antonio Stradivari” in the home of Antonio Stradivari, where from 1667 to 1680 his inimitable career began. Be inspired by the genius loci of the house and through films, images and books gain new insights into his unique work. The house is open during the music fair “Mondomusica” in Cremona from 29th September to 2nd October 2016, 3.00 pm – 8.30 pm. Entry is free. Antonio Stradivari: From inlayer to the king of violin making Following his marriage to Francesca Ferraboscho, the still young Antonio Stradivari moved into the house of Francesco Pescaroli, for whose “Bottega di Pescaroli” he completed high-quality inlay work. It is probable that in his spare time he learnt the art of violin making from the already famous Nicolo Amati, whose atelier was situated close to Pescaroli’s workshop. Amati had inlay work for his own instruments completed in the “Bottega di Pescaroli”, so the young Antonio would have easily come into contact with violin making – a craft that was to become his whole life’s work. Although inlay work had already gone out of fashion in Antonio’s time, violin makers still used it to demonstrate to wealthy, aristocratic customers that they were capable of producing such beautiful and decorative work. There was lively exchange between the workshops of the already world-renowned “Amati” and “Rugeri” families at the time. At this stage it was probably not yet possible to see the slumbering talent and the huge competition this young, ambitious inlayer would pose, and so Antonio was given easy access to the famous workshops. Antonio Stradivari’s independent career as a violin maker began only gradually due to the continual growth of his family and the advantages of the secure income he received from Pescaroli. According to the Hill Brothers (London), Antonio produced an average of only 4 instruments a year in the period from 1665 to 1684. However, the instruments he made in the years 1666 to 1681 (around 44 instruments are known today) tell a different story and strongly suggest that he was already producing his own instruments alongside his inlay work for the “Bottega di Pescaroli”. This perhaps explains how Stradivari acquired the 2,000 Lire Imperiali he needed to buy the house on the Piazza Domenico (now the Piazza Roma) for his workshop in 1680.
