Music Xray

Musicians, welcome to the NFL

For generations musicians have been saying, “If only I could get heard by the right people I know they would love my music. I know they would see my talent.”

Music Xray has brought a level playing field to musicians, songwriters, and performing acts. But the level playing field isn’t always what you think it’s going to be. Often, it forces musicians to come face-to-face with some hard truths. Are you really as good as you think you are? When you’re getting a fair shot and are consistently being turned down, it’s hard to argue with the answer. But some artists still blame Music Xray instead of seeing the value of the lessons learned by gaining quick access to the level playing field. It’s like blaming the phone company when someone calls to deliver some bad news.

I’m going to share with you the communication I had today with an artist who found me on LinkedIn. I’m going to redact some of it to protect her identity, but you’ll get the point.

Here it is:

Hello Mike,
I understand that you are the owner of Music Xray.

I submitted my song through your site about 17 times and many times received the answer that my music is good but isn’t what they are are looking for. Some gave me advice on how to improve the song.

According to your site, songs of similar strength have been selected after 14 submissions. But mine still has not.

Now, I know my song is very good and I think if it gets to the right ears it can be successful. Please take a listen:

What your site is actually doing is disappointing me over and over again…

Moneyball for the music industry?

As the industry pools it’s collective screening resources, the game is changing yet again.
By applying music-analyzing software and the collective screening efforts of 1500 industry professionals, Music Xray makes identifying high-potential music like finding a needle in a needlestack.Millions of songs are created and released each year by aspiring musicians, bands, and songwriters. In fact, there are 11 hours of audio content uploaded to SoundCloud every minute. If only 0.01% of that music were of commercial interest that would equal 1 hour 35 minutes and 2 seconds of music the industry should discover everyday. And that’s just SoundCloud. Add in YouTube and every other destination for undiscovered music and the number grow significantly. But identifying that music is a daunting task and social traction surrounding most music only surfaces a small number of obvious hits leaving most music with commercial value buried in web obscurity. In January 2010, Music Xray began inviting industry professionals and the record labels, publishers, radio stations, & film production companies they represent to register for an account. Now, with over 1500 industry professionals pitching in to screen music daily, over 1,000 songs & acts per month are singled out for various types of deals.
