The Don Ellis Big Band, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Akiyoshi-Tabackin Big Band, Al Jarreau, Manhattan Transfer, Seals and Crofts, and Free Flight are just a few of Ralph Humphrey’s touring and recording credits. Additionally, he has been featured on albums by numerous other artists, including Babaghanoush, The Outsider, Tom Rainer, Mike Miller, and Jeff Richman.

Humphrey is one of the most sought-after studio drummers in Los Angeles, recording for TV, movies, albums, and jingles. He has published pieces for Modern Drummer Magazine and the drumming books Even in the Odds and Rhythm by the Numbers: A Drummer’s Guide to Creative Practising.

In 1973, Ralph joined Frank Zappa’s band. Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe, Roxy & Elsewhere, You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore Volumes 1, 3, 4, and 6, Piquantique, Unmitigated Audacity, The Lost Episodes, and Lather are among the albums on which his drumming can be heard. The documentary The Drummers Of Frank Zappa features an interview with him.

Ralph has been teaching for a very long time. He oversees the drum department at the Los Angeles College of Music and writes curricula for Drumchannel.com. He and Joe Porcaro developed the drum curriculum for the Hollywood-based Musicians Institute’s Percussion Institute of Technology. He performs in the renowned Steven Bates Band in his hometown of Coastal Mendocino County.
