Alvin Queen always at the top of this game, touring and keeping up with the trends of keeping a prominent face in the industry. His new website dons everything from his music catalogue, touring schedule, personal photography and reflections of a stellar musical career. “The Jazz Network Worldwide is proud to feature legendary drummer Alvin Queen. He has been a mainstay with our network since its inception in 2008 and we couldn’t be prouder to design and launch his new website and promote his upcoming summer tour. He’s played with the best in the industry and continues to shine his light on any stage he sets his spirit to, its truly an honor to support his countless gifts as he launches his quest of ‘keeping up with Alvin” in todays technology” says Jaijai Jackson of The Jazz Network Worldwide.
Oscar Peterson was quoted saying “First and foremost, Alvin is basically a comedian, in a personal sense, being able to see humor in almost any circumstance. His whole personality is based on this premise. It is noticeably carried over into the music by that joyful, kid-like smile that he gets when the group seems to reach a very cohesive groove. He has a tremendous command of his instrument, along with a very creative and diversified musical cadence, speaking from the aspect of his solo work. It is a joy and inspiration to exchange musical ideas with him, which results in heightening of my own ideas as we go along. By the way, so far I have forgotten to mention the most important aspect that he brings to our group impeccable time!.”
Not only is Queen an accomplished musician, he is an impeccable photographer that truly has that gift of capturing the essence of a moment in time with depth, color and variety. There are quite a few of his favorite moments throughout his musical journey from his travels viewable on his new website (www.alvinqueen.com) In addition, Alvin shares some of the priceless memories he holds close to his heart as ‘reflections’ on his website.
The summer tour on tap for Alvin is going to be ‘real hot’ as New Legacy Concerts coordinated top-tier musical happenings that include Alvin on each concert with other jazz greats. Beginning June 1-July 10 Randy Brecker, Gary Peacock at The Jazz Standard in Copenhagen. June 1-9 Niels Lan Doky introducing Tobias Dall, June 10-12 Alvin Queen & Tobias Dall introducing Calle Brickman, June 14-19 Randy Brecker A.Q, June 28 – July 10 Copenhagen Jazz Festival: Gary Peacock A.Q.
Its no surprise the caliber of artistry Alvin has graced worldwide stages with, its like the ‘who’s who of jazz’ ie.: Eric Alexander, Terence Blanchard, Manny Boyd, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Arnett Cobb, Dolo Cocker, Al Cohn, George Coleman, Bob Cunningham, Dee Daniels, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Jessie Davis, Buddy de Franco, Dorothy Donegan, Kenny Drew Sr., Mercer Ellington, Robin Eubanks, Art Farmer, Jimmy Garrison, Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Gomez, Dexter Gordon, Al Grey, Johnny Griffin, Roy Hargrove, Milt Jackson, Plas Johnson, Kevin Mahogany, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Christian McBride, Jay McShann, Mulgrew Miller, Joe Newman, Horace Parlan, Nicolas Payton, Niels Henning, Orsted Pederson, Oscar Peterson, Red Richards, David Sanchez, Pharoah Sanders, Zoot Sims, Terell Stafford, Lou Tabackin, Buddy Tate, Leon Thomas, Mickey Tucker, Stanley Turrentine, Warren Vache, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Bennie Wallace, Peter Washington, Randy Weston, Joe Lee Wilson and Reggie Workman. Currently, Alvin is seeking non-exclusive agents worldwide to jump on his bandwagon in booking concerts for the 2017/2018 calendar year. In addition to live performance, Alvin is opening up his musical vault looking to assemble some classic sessions for his fans. If in the area, be sure to buy your tickets to save your spot for his ‘hot’ summer tour.

WARM GREETINGS EVERYONE….
Life is flying by it seems and I continuously try to find creative ways to help artists, bands and all subset businesses create affordable ways to get access to worldwide festivals. I have come up with an idea that I believe will be helpful from our platform and most affordable for those that are seeking this support. Mind you this promotion is not designed for just one artists’ submission, this is a grouping effort.
We all know jazz is a very tough business and there are many that hold down other jobs just to stay afloat…and ‘that’s real’. Most embrace a true love for the art of jazz and then there is the “business of jazz’. I’ve been reading articles about how important it is to consistently keep your branding before the buyer/promoter. Having been an entertainment director in my career as well as seeing it when people submit to The Jazz Network Worldwide for consideration. I understand the process on the end of the buyer, not enough time to go through submissions, so you have to try something new to get their attention.
Here’s what propose, I’m looking to send out email blasts to 200 festivals introducing five artists at a time for consideration from The Jazz Network Worldwide family. The artists will be handpicked for these submissions and will be artists that compliment each other in stature, yet uniquely different, this way each one will stand on their own accomplishments and considered for their festivals upcoming rosters. I’m always thinking of new ways to for independent artists to promote themselves, for many struggle with the costs of marketing and promotion and have run out of money on their actual recording and have very little to work with. I see this everyday in jazz.
In addition to this promotion, I’m offering new ways to create a crowd funding campaign to help support these costs. If any of you want to create a campaign but don’t know how, I’m here to help you format your pitch to the marketplace with innovative ways to give back.
What I’m looking to do is promote five artists at a time from The Jazz Network Worldwide platform for consideration to the jazz festivals that are now booking for the 2017 calendar. Each festival submission email will consist of five artists/bands that are uniquely their own. Your CD cover along with a paragraph about the artist/band with a click through to your website for the buyer to learn more. It is proven that if you keep up with your correspondence to these promoters, eventually you will stand out from the crowd and be remembered for being consistently “in their face.” (LOL)
If you are interested in this support, contact me right away at jaijai@
Always on your side,
With Love,
Jaijai

Featured This Week On The Jazz Network Worldwide: Savvy Trumpeter Freddie Jacobs With His CD “Jacobs’ Ladder”.
“JACOBS’ LADDER” is Freddie Jacobs’ second record release bringing a state of the art recording with stellar musicianship, uniquely expressive sound and soaring musical imagination. Jacobs has firmly established his sound as a true jazz instrumentalist.
(PRWEB) April 18, 2016
Freddie Jacobs, Jazz Trumpeter, Composer and Educator has seen the music business from many sides. From touring with jazz legends Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, Eddie Palmieri and Jimmy McGriff, to performing around NY with the Sam Jones/Tom Harrell Band, Nina Sheldon, Judi Silvano, Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers, and currently in South Florida with Tom Regis, Don Wilner, Stephen Scott, Felipe LaMoglia, Mike Orta, Mike Gerber, Emilio Valenzuela and the late Patti Wicks.
Freddie’s current CD “JACOBS’ LADDER” includes his original compositions: Journey thru Night, Dream Voyage, Kensha and For Real, and features – John DiMartino (p), Harvie S (bs), Yoron Israel (d), Adam Kolker (sx), Chris Washburne (tbn), Renato Thoms (perc).
Fred Jacobs, jazz trumpeter/composer, “sounds as bright and assured as Freddie Hubbard or Woody Shaw, but with verve and a smooth, fluent originality,” Robert Spencer, All About Jazz.
“Jacobs displays a solid, straight up sound and compositional skills … he illustrates the idea that the trumpet’s magic power is not limited to those who have gained sufficient recognition to make the covers of magazines” Norman Provizer, JAZZIZ
“Concentrates on melody, symmetry and beauty of tone rather than macho displays of speed, volume and pitch” Krin Gabbard, CADENCE.
“Gets around the horn with style and distinct creativity” Mark Goodale, JAZZ TRUMPET JOURNAL.
Besides his touring background, Jacobs has also made jazz education a distinct avocation.
“His exceptional experience brings insights to those students that normally wouldn’t get the opportunity to learn jazz on this level. And the musicality on his recordings speaks volumes” says Jaijai Jackson of The Jazz Network Worldwide.
Having produced his albums TIME CHANGE, & JACOBS’ LADDER, holding a BS degree, studies with Herb Pomeroy, John Harbison, Dan Ricigliano, Carmine Caruso, Lennie Johnson, Freddie Hubbard, & Eddie Daniels, all provide a wellspring of wisdom, whether it be in the studio or live performance. Teaching has always been a calling for Jacobs. It seems he is quite aptly suited to take this art to the young minds of today. Many jazz festivals of late utilize the educational platform as an extension of live performances. This is the type of setting that Jacobs thrives in, to teach a master class and then bring that expertise to the stage, showing the students how it is commanded in a live performance setting. Whether as a featured artist with a local band or bringing his own band, he currently seeks bookings for worldwide jazz stages teaching Jazz – Improv, Harmony, Ensemble Direction, Workshops and Clinics. Jacobs is a strong presence on the jazz trumpeting scene and is considered top shelf. He is looking to explore new horizons playing and teaching, passing on what he learned from the masters, the presentation of real jazz.

Creating easy, laid back grooves behind his passionate dreamy lead horn melodies, he creates the perfect Smooth Jazz chill album, opening doors into a dreamy, atmosphere rich realm full of lush, powerful moods and a relaxing flow. Its evident from hearing the jazz big band works of composer, arranger, conductor and trombonist Henry Wolking’s debut album on Big Round Records, IN SEA, that he effectively mixes complexity with simplicity in his jazz harmonies and colorful orchestrations that make for an exciting and memorable listening experience. The inspired solo work of band members and guest artists add to the sincere and fresh cosmopolitan character of the recording Performed by the Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra (SLCJO) and conducted by Wolking, the works on this album represent Wolking’s clear direction of fusing together a number of different styles, from classical and rock to Latin and swing. Pieces such as the title track In Sea, and Sumo Mix, honor and pay tribute to iconic jazz composers and musicians of the past, including Bob Brookmeyer and Thad Jones, influential to Wolking’s compositional style. Claude Debussy’s impressionistic approach becomes a foundational element in some of these works, which Wolking interprets deftly with jazz harmonies and syncopated rhythms in pieces such as Jimbo’s Lullaby, A Piece of Cake, and Claire De Lune. Featured This Week On The Jazz Network Worldwide: “Intervention”, the latest Gospel Jazz release by Saxophonist Art Sherrod Jr. Art Sherrod Jr. gives us a glimpse into what defines him as a man – his love for the Lord, his family and music. “Intervention” features 13 spiritually enriched tracks that highlight Art’s roots in Gospel, Jazz, R&B and Funk. The genesis of this jazz project began long ago in the church. Art credits gospel music for his appreciation for all styles of music. Music that inspires, heals and praises is the “Intervention” that is needed when we go through tests in life. Art describes, “Intervention” as, “… my most personal CD project yet because it speaks to those moments when your faith is being tested and your back is up against a wall. We’ve all been there. This is why I believe that “Intervention” is such a powerful CD. Everyone is going to be able to benefit and relate to the message within each song. I am so excited and can’t wait for my Smooth Jazz and Gospel listeners to put their ears on this project. It’s going to be life-changing!” David Sanborn, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright and Kim Waters all influence Art’s sound, which can be heard in his sophomore project, “Seasons”. Still a crowd favorite, “Seasons”, features several industry superstars including Will Downing, Chuck Loeb, Gerald Albright, Frank McComb, Tracy Hamlin, Marcus Johnson, U-Nam, Alex Al and others. Never forgetting the foundation of his love of music, it was a natural progression for Sherrod to bring his signature sound to gospel jazz. Art assembled another great group of artists to complete his vision for this inspired project. “Intervention” features the soulful stylings of Incognito’s lead female vocalist, Maysa Leak, on a very funky arrangement of Edwin Hawkins’ Oh Happy Day. The album also includes traditional Gospel songs like It Is Well, He Looked Beyond My Faults, My Soul Has Been Anchored and a funky horn section infused arrangement of Walter Hawkins’ Going Up Yonder. The contemporary side of Art is revealed as he interprets Vashawn Mitchell’s Nobody Greater and William McDowell’s I Give Myself Away, Chris Tomlin’s How Great is Our God featuring guitarist Alan Scott, How Excellent featuring world renowned bass guitarist, David Dyson, and Donnie McClurkin’s mega hit Stand. By no means is “Intervention” your ordinary Gospel jazz project, as it also features some nontraditional songs like Frankie Beverly’s I Wanna Thank You and Sam Cooke’s A Change Gonna Come. “Intervention” will keep you immersed from the first to the last song. With one listen, it is clear to see that Art Sherrod Jr’s passion is to connect to the hearts of diverse audiences with an “Intervention”of love and spiritual healing. This project is his living testimony. Art is currently booking jazz & Gospel festivals for the 2016/2017 calendar and has a strong national press and radio promotion campaign currently underway. “The Jazz Network Worldwide is proud to get behind Art Sherrod Jr.’s “Intervention”. After listening to all of the tracks on his CD I found that not only was it easy to tap into his musical history of heart which is Gospel but it had all the flavorings of every genre he’s been inspired by. It’s a soulful offering at best”, says Jaijai Jackson, of The Jazz Network Worldwide. Featured This Week On The Jazz Network Worldwide: Vocalist Daina Shukis stages a signature comeback with her new CD “Smooth and Jazzy”. Daina Shukis is a multi-faceted performer who’s catalogue consists of various flavors of music from the new wave pop art culture that spans from Rock, Pop, Jazz and middle eastern accents. “Smooth and Jazzy” is just another testament of how genres can be blended and how dance enhances its essence. Diana Shukis captures the core message in each song she approaches with an inimitable style all her own. Having influences that span from Jazz, rock, funk and country, Shukis brings her originality to the forefront. ”Daina and the Tribe” has been her signature band that she has performed with for years back in the New York City area in such notable clubs as the Bottom Line (opening for James Cotton), The Lone Star (opening for Jaco Pastorious) and CBGB’s. For the past few years, Daina has combed through the maze of some of her best performances and has created a vintage catalogue that will live throughout the ages. “The one thing that I remember most about my performances with the Tribe was how the audiences would participate in our performances, with accents of chants and musical praise” says Shukis. On her recently released album “Smooth and Jazzy”, which is comprised of her favorites songs, she chose to remix the tune “Movie Show’ as her latest single from the compilation giving it a modern slant on today’s music scene, creating a new audience that appreciates the blending of these musical styles. “I am delighted to bring you this album with many cuts from the beginning of the new wave pop art culture in New York City in such a top-grade audio recording. I look forward to performing these songs and new material in the near future with great anticipation. It is an exciting time for me to launch a comeback with old friends and new musical ideas. The older jazz and blues singers still out there on the road are a great inspiration. Wish me luck! says Daina. More recently, Shukis has incorporated a few songs embracing our American roots with a Patsy Cline tribute into her set, where she shares how Patsy influenced her vocal style by performing originals on guitar and piano at the end of every set. To date, she has produced five albums from her vintage catalogue, one instrumental album, “Mystic Rendezvous” with Daina and the Tribe, on which Daina plays impressionist compositions on synthesizer. Her latest addition to her catalogue is a sure fire compilation that will not only capsulate her eclectic mix of sound but a vintage musical history that stands the test of time. “Smooth and Jazzy” has been picked to be in rotation on her radio station on Pandora and she is ranked #1 in Jazz on Reverberation in Port Richey, Florida. “Daina is a very unique spirit, known for her love of cultural flare in her writing and performances derived from the Middle East, Greek, Turkish and Arabic music. In her vintage videos you can clearly see how she skillfully executes her choreographic pieces when she took the stage with a serious intention toward excellence in her craft, not only in dance but visually through her authentic costumes that ranged from tribal art painted on her body to classic rock looks. Her vocals stem from a bluesy, rock feel with jazz flavorings and tribal chants, her performance puts you in a trance that takes you on her eclectic improvisational journey of song and percussive presentation” says Jaijai Jackson of The Jazz Network Worldwide. At this stage in Shukis’s career, having so much performance memories in her musical arsenal, she is now presenting a “looking back” journey, story-telling of her many escapades through her New York days with some of the best musicians on the planet. From the likes of Jeremy Steig, Don Alias, Eddie Gomez, Ray Mantilla, Jimmy Madison, Jerome Harris, Paul Ramsey, Dan Wall, Tom Coppolla, Judy Niemack, Marvin Horne, Greg Carter, Butch Campell, Lee Finklestein and Bill Washer who are all performing with her on new release “Smooth and Jazzy”. She brings a fervor of heart to her upcoming performance schedule and offering musical memories that only she can tell. This choice of performance once again allows for the new audience to find themselves in her music and to walk away with an impression that will be a memory etched by musical history. Looking to bring her musical story-telling to worldwide stages, big and small, from intimate to large venues with her musical potpourri will be sure to please the most eclectic of musical tastes from jazz to rock, funk, country and beyond. |

Originally starting out as a drummer at seventeen years of age, he discovered the music of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett’s piano playing which led him to switch instruments to the piano. He remembers a quote from drummer Peter Erskine, “play what you mean and mean what you play” for this quote opened up a whole new horizon as he began to play and record professionally as a serious musician. While studying jazz piano at Massey University in Wellington New Zealand Dan formed his first trio and played in local venues and mainly at “Bar Bodega”. Dan’s trio recorded their debut album of jazz standards which was released by Ode Records in March of 2004 entitled “Session One” and was nominated for a New Zealand Music Award. “Session Two” was a compilation of original tunes, the three releases afterward were live albums recorded at the trio residency venue The “MLC Café & Bar”. His 6th album “2011” and his 7th album “2014” includes his original “Bargara” which won second place in the Australia Jazz Convention Original tunes competition in December 2011. His latest recording is titled “2015” and includes one original tune entitled “Eb Major Waltz”. Dan’s repertoire consists of originals and jazz standards while appearing at local jazz spots such as the Bundaberg Jazz club and special events when reformed his trio in 2014. After many stage performances Dan found that his playing matured, phrases became more melodious, often stretching across the bar line with phrases appearing to be more defined and resolving better than before as he consistently reaches for higher heights in his musical abilities. His favorite musical setting is to perform at a venue that houses a grand piano with a cohesive group of musicians that listens and interacts with each other as they counter solo with the piano, like the Bill Evans trio is known for presenting. Papirany’s music is the opposite of where the mainstream jazz sound is today, he finds that current sounds are always experimental and doesn’t try to follow these trends, simply because he wouldn’t be happy sounding like most modern players. He currently has collaboration with Norwegian vocalist Vibeke Voller resulting in an exciting, rich and creative inspiration to much loved jazz standards! “Don’t go to strangers” is their first Duo album, the complimentary interaction of these two unique talents has produced a fresh and polished musical experience! Recently Dan has been contacted by Jazz and Blues TV and was asked to bring his trio to their studios for live streaming performances as well as being recognized as a featured artist on The Jazz Network Worldwide. His plan for 2016/2017 is to perform on jazz festival stages worldwide. CLICK HERE TO ENJOY THE VIDEO PRESENTATION OF THE DAN PAPIRANY TRIO PERFORMING “BLUE BOSSA” |

The musical collaboration between Norwegian vocalist Vibeke Voller and Israeli Jazz pianist Dan Papirany has brought an exciting, rich and creative inspiration to much loved jazz standards! Both musicians are composers, Vibeke also being a talented lyricist. Vibeke has had extensive vocal training both in Norway and Sydney, Australia, excelling in various genres and has been awarded qualifications from the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney. She has performed in Australia and overseas, also touring with former “Platters” star Esther King. Dan studied jazz at the Massey University in Wellington New Zealand and has performed regularly in New Zealand as well as Australia, and has won various awards for his music. Both Vibeke and Dan are recording artists in their own right and “Don’t go to strangers” is their first Duo album. They are expected to release their second album “I took a chance” in 2016. Dan’s instrumental composition “Bargara” on the current album won an award in the Australian Jazz convention for original tunes in 2011. Lyrics for this song were written by Vibeke in 2015 specifically for this album. The two have been performing together since 2014, playing also with other musicians, a highlight being invited to perform on the main stage at the Noosa Jazz Festival in September 2015. Both based in Queensland Australia the complimentary interaction of these two unique talents has produced a fresh and polished musical experience!

Fredrik Jonsson, Christer Sjöström (Prophone/Naxos) To combine classical music and jazz is not easy. Many attempts have been done if not particularly successful. The turn has now come to the flutist Magnus Båge who is producing this cd. Together with the piano player Lars Jansson he has composed half of the content of the cd. Lars is responsible for the rest of the material. With Fredrik Jansson bass and the drummer Christer Sjöström the group is complete in a rare CD with a personal shape. The title of the CD means shape in Japanese. The music has a meditative form which can approach the territory of the jazz – but not always. The moods are changing between soft light improvised contributions and more strongly held parts. The open improvised parts add air and tension to the often occurring withdrawn play where the rhythms are relaxed and subordinate Båges and Lars beautiful sensual intentions. Göran Olson “Satori” can be ordered directly at magnus@magnusbage.com. Magnus received his soloist diploma at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm 1994, and performed the Mozart flute concerto in G major with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has since then been frequently engaged as a soloist and worked in many of Sweden´s symphony orchestras. His first solo cd (Flute Music, SFZ 1005) was released in autumn 2003 and received brilliant reviews both in Sweden and abroad. Magnus has worked as a flautist since 1990. The recent years he has mainly worked as a soloist, performing classical music as well as jazz. Vist Magnus Båge Official Website

Featured on The Jazz Network Worldwide This Week: Vintage Jazz Era Vocalist Roberta Donnay & the Prohibition Mob Band’s Motema Music Release, “Bathtub Gin”. On the heels of their beloved A Little Sugar release comes their second Motéma Music release, Bathtub Gin – the CD, like A Little Sugar, mines 1920s gems but also takes the listener on a stroll into the 1930s. Award-winning vocalist and songwriter Roberta Donnay is that rare species of musician who almost lives in another time, as she and her Prohibition Mob Band exist to revive the Jazz Age of America. A seductive vocalist, Donnay and her band swing mightily with this authentic collection of vintage jazz, blues and swing that introduces listeners to the swing era with its jump-swing rhythmic horn sections and new dances. Donnay also includes four party-rousing shout-chorus originals that evoke and revive the open spirit that birthed jazz. She says of the era’s music, “I think it’s in everybody’s DNA. Our grandparents listened to that music and somehow it filtered down inside of us.” How far can the Prohibition Mob Band go? “To the moon,” she says, laughing. Honoring the tradition of such seminal singers as Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Sippie Wallace, Louis Armstrong, Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday and Josephine Baker, Donnay’s spitfire is on display from the moment the original title track “Bathtub Gin” opens the set. Following is the song, also original, “Throw Your Heart” (Over The Fence). Roberta Donnay’s background in roots jazz music came from listening to records, singing with the legendary Dick Oxtot’s Golden Age Jazz Band and more obscure jazz and jazz-folk bands bands. Donnay continues to produce, write, record, and perform as an independent artist. Her goal is to produce many more records and continue to bring this great music to the people. “Bathtub Gin” is Ms. Donnay’s 8thindependent release. The “Oh Papa”video from Donnay’s CD “ A Little Sugar” is a brilliant example of the style of presentation Donnay presents. Donnay has shared the stage, opened, or performed with Ernestine Anderson, Bob Dorough, Herbie Hancock, Joe Sample, Christian McBride, Lewis Nash, Dr. John, Diana Krall, George Benson, David Sanborn, Leon Russell, Dan Hicks, Bonnie Raitt, David Grisman, Bruce Forman, Rickie Lee Jones, Big Walter Horton, John Hammond, Lee Ritenour, Booker T., Tuck & Patti. Donnay’s voice could make any classic material sound wondrous and timeless, but the fact that she digs so deep into American musical history — and works with some of the Bay Area’s top jazz musicians (under the guise of the Prohibition Mob Band) — makes A Little Sugar not only sweet, but a recording that will stand the test of time.~ All Music Guide With her singularly enticing sound, few contemporary vocalists are as well suited to dustily vintage material as jazz-blues stylist Roberta Donnay. She affectively proved so three years ago when, teamed with her Prohibition Mob Band, she surveyed standards from the 1920s and ’30s on the charming “A Little Sugar”. Now she’s back for more. ~ Jazz Times 2015 Donnay takes old school jazz, makes it new cool and most of all makes it fun. It swings and it swings hard. Old school has never sounded better and Roberta Donnay is certainly a name to remember! (5 stars) ~ Critical Jazz blog This jazz baby makes the ’20s roar again and swings out ’30s tunes buoyantly enough to float away even the Great Depression…She’s backed by top-notch musicians and the results are gloriously entertaining. ~ San Jose Mercury News “ROBERTA DONNAY & the Prohibition Mob Band bring back the true essence of the Roaring ’20s… when music and class went hand and hand, no wonder DownBeat gave “Bathtub Gin” four stars! says Jaijai Jackson of The Jazz Network Worldwide. A festival favorite, Donnay’s group appeared as a guest artist at many shows and festivals, including the Exit 0 Jazz Fest in N.J., Whiskey Fest in Portland, San Jose Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Mustard Mud & Music Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and are currently seeking festival bookings for the 2016-2017 calendar. Roberta was asked to be a part of an event very close to her heart which is the memorial for the legendary jazz producer and Jazz Master Orrin Keepnews at Yoshi’s in Oakland, CA on November 29th, 2015 where she will pay homage to their musical relationship. Jeff Lorber Fusion, whose previous release Hacienda was praised for its “impeccable musicianship and deep grooves” by JazzTimes and its “funky, rollicking jams” by All About Jazz, returns on September 25, 2015, with Step It Up on Heads Up, a division ofConcord Music Group. The fourth consecutive collaboration between GRAMMY®-nominated keyboardist/composer/producer Jeff Lorber and GRAMMY®-winningbassist/composer/ producer Jimmy Haslip since the two virtuosos reactivated JeffLorber Fusion five years ago, Step It Up features 11 new Lorber compositions, several co-written with Haslip. The longtime colleagues also co-produced the recording. The title Step It Up, says Lorber, “reflects the music: optimistic, energetic and an attempt to ‘step up’ our game—our compositions, production and improvisation—to the next level. This record puts us back in a more familiar Jeff Lorber Fusion groove while we explore some new uncharted areas.” “We were motivated to find a new direction following Hacienda,” adds Haslip. “That one was a full-on experimental recording. Step It Up is more inside the Jeff Lorber Fusion box but has some new and interestingtwists.” Assisting the pair in creating those twists is a team of world-class musicians, including two former bandmates of Haslip’s in the award-winning fusion band Yellowjackets: saxophonist Bob Mintzer and guitarist Robben Ford. Also lending a hand are drummers Ash Soan, Gary Novak and Vinnie Colaiuta; saxophonist Gary Meek and guitarists Michael Thompson and Paul Jackson Jr. David Mann provides horn arrangements and Lenny Castro percussion. The album was recorded primarily at JHL Sound in Pacific Palisades, California, with additional recording done at other studios in the U.S. and Europe. As on all past Jeff Lorber Fusion releases, dating back to its 1977 self-titled debut, Step It Up effortlessly mines and merges elements from multiple genres, including jazz, funk, rock and R&B. The original Jeff Lorber Fusion took an extended hiatus in the early ’80s, reemerging and recharging in 2010 with an updated approach that incorporates contemporary rhythms, technology and instrumentation. Prior to Step It Up and Hacienda, Jeff Lorber Fusion released Now Is the Time (2010) and Galaxy (2012), both also via Heads Up. But as theybegan working on what ultimately became Step It Up, Lorber and Haslip realized they were heading to some new places in their music.
