A Quick note from Dr. Boyce:  First, I’d like to say Happy Father’s Day to all of the dedicated dads who are reading this.  Your sacrifices are invaluable, you are our heros and I encourage you to never underestimate your power to change worlds.

I would also like to say thank you to Tyler Perry for allowing me to tour Tyler Perry studios during my trip to Atlanta.  The facility is amazing, and I am encouraged by his willingness to use his power and influence to create jobs in the black community.  No matter what you think about his films, you must applaud Tyler for making the conscious decision to bring Hollywood to Atlanta and resurrect some of the great black talent that may not get a second look in traditional media.

I can also say that Tyler is a geniunely good person, which is not always a guarantee among celebrities.

Finally, I encourage anyone in the Washington DC area to join Dr. Ron Daniels and his coalition during their rally against the War on Drugs, which is to take place tomorrow.  You can find out more at this link.  The War on Drugs has been the single greatest factor in the destruction of black families over the last 40 years.   You can’t talk about the fatherlessness or black marriage problems without discussing the growth of the prison industrial complex – they are deeply and disturbingly connected.

Until we meet again, please stay strong, be blessed and be educated.

Sincerely,

Dr. Boyce Watkins

Four Reasons Why Black Women Continue to be Obese

1) Hair:  Have you ever heard a woman say that she can’t exercise because she doesn’t want to sweat out her hair?   Do you know that by not exercising, every toxic piece of grease, fat and red meat you consume simply marinates inside your body and rots you to the core?  I know that’s […]

Washington Post: Let’s Stop Ruining Lives Over a Bag of Weed

Washington Post: Let’s Stop Ruining Lives Over a Bag of WeedIncarcerating so many millions of Americans is taking a huge toll on society.  Corporations make money in the short-term, but the incarceration laws quickly turn normal, law-abiding citizens into career criminals.  Those convicted of felonies have few opportunities to re-enter into society, and prison exposes them to unhealthy and traumatic experiences.  Does this policy make […]

Falling Far from the Tree: Thurgood Marshall Jr. Sits on the Board for the Corrections Corporations of America

By Kim Moore This serves as both an open letter to Thurgood Marshall Jr, a PSA for those who didn’t know about his appointment to CCA and a reminder about mass incarceration, and the overrepresentation of black men in prison. It came as a complete and utter shock to discover yesterday that Thurgood Marshall Jr, […]
