I would like to honor the life of David Counter who passed away in his sleep last week. Dave was a big part of the heyday of Relativity Records..Satriani, Vai…..and my solo records and a dear friend. We played a lot of golf, went to number of baseball games and hoisted a few. I would like to relate the best prank that I played on him.
I was given a HUGE budget for my 3rd CD “the Urge”…I think it was whopping 30K…~!!!. It was the height of the big hair 80’s and I decided to sing on the record so that I would sell 8 million copies and get rich. Relativity was a little concerned about their investment so they sent Dave to Rumbo studios to check it out. He walked in and we sat him down at the console….We started the 2 inch machine but had it muted and actually played a CD of an awful AWFUL track (Grand Canyon Suite by Refuge…..) and pretended that it was the title track for my album with me singing. I wish that I could share with you all the look on Dave’s face….Sheer HORROR at how god-awful the track was….but he never said a bad word…told me how great it was, what a great singer I was and that we would sell 9 MILLION copies, not 8….
Rest in Peace my friend….those were good days made better by YOU.
