World’s largest stills and motion clips resource launched

Talented photographers to be promoted globally

The world’s first online directory for picture buyers, which will give access to hundreds of photographers and their libraries around the world, has been launched by picturehouse.

The picturehouse global image directory, which is being described as the largest stills and motion resource in the world, is powered and hosted by Mainstream Data (MSD), the international technology provider.

Michael Brown, the Founder and CEO, of the new venture said: “I founded picturehouse as a networking event in 2001 to bring picture professionals together and it was the first event of its kind. Now I’ve created the first online directory for discerning picture buyers who want to find the very best images.”

He added: “There are millions of mediocre images available on the web and picturehouse will help you find specialist and pre-eminent sources of stills and motion clips from around the world.”

Brown said: “Photographers shooting stills and videos are the life blood of the industry. Over recent years photography has become commoditised to the detriment of many talented creatives who have become virtually invisible. It’s time these photographers were acknowledged and promoted to increase the quality of published images, which in the majority of instances has become very mundane and predictable.”

Richard Buckler, Sales & Operations Director, EMEA & Oceania, from MSD said: “Mainstream Data are supporting this new initiative because it reflects their commitment to being a leading technology provider to the global visual communications industry. This will be the first on-line resource of its kind anywhere in the world.”

The Launch coincides with fotofringe the only industry-networking event in the UK. picturehouse founded the first such event in 2001 in London and New York.

Michael Brown said: “The directory has over 2,000 entries from more than 70 countries.
It lists suppliers of all visual content, photos, footage, illustration, fine art, etc. Its primary purpose is to find top quality content from specialist suppliers.”

He added: “Quality not quantity is the philosophy behind the directory structure and visitors will be able to search the text directory to find little known specialists or search for images. With hundreds of millions of mediocre images available on the web this directory will help the discerning picture buyer find exclusive high end content.

Background: The ‘live’ concept of picturehouse was founded 13 years ago and has prompted many similar networking events around the world. The web based solution was conceived a couple of years ago and was launched at the London CEPIC Congress in 2012. Following this event and further consultation it was decided to scope the market and create a Global Image Directory, probably the first serious attempt to provide a truly global and comprehensive industry directory. An indication of the quality and type of photographers we have attracted can be seen by searching for ‘gold’ members in the directory athttp://www.picturehouse.org/connections/memberlevel/3/
