Quick note from Dr. Boyce: I want to give my most sincere thanks to those who supported our weekend sale of products from Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu. I consider Dr. Kunjufu to be a leading authority on the education of black boys, which is critical to the future of our community. As Frederick Douglass once said, “It’s easier to build strong boys than to repair broken men.”
Dr. Kunjufu and I share the joint objective of preparing young black males to become empowered husbands, fathers and assets for their communities. I am also working closely with Dr. Steve Perry, who has agreed to join me weekly on the Your Black World network to have conversations about pushing our children to greatness. Steve and I agree that we are neither liberal nor conservative, and that tough love and across-the-board accountability are needed for us to make our children great.
I also appreciate your tolerating the fact that every now and then, we have to sell products in order to keep our platform strong and thriving. You have no idea how many times we’ve had to pass up on corporate money in order to preserve the integrity of our voice, for we sadly live in a world where black intellectual liberation is often subjugated by the fact that most black media outlets are owned by people who don’t care anything about us (i.e. notice how nearly every urban radio station plays the same music, or how many of your favorite black public figures appear to have been co-opted. Money is usually the culprit).
When I did research for my book, “Black American Money,” one of my conclusions was that a huge reason that African Americans have struggled to advance over the last 50 years is that we have not often been able to develop sustainable, yet ethical business models that keep our organizations alive. We either spend our time begging for money from our historical oppressors, or we go to the “dark side of capitalism,” where we sell our souls for a dollar. I find that a healthy balance between making money and making a difference is critical to being free both personally and professionally (that is how I escaped the racism I had to endure as a professor at Syracuse University).
The bottom line is that I wouldn’t ask for your financial support if we didn’t need it. We give the content on YBW for free, but there are always bills to pay, so our goal is to provide quality products and information from African American entrpreneurs, authors, filmmakers and activists that allow you to support black businesses and also invest in your life.
I truly appreciate all that you’ve done to help us keep it moving. Without you, I am nothing, and neither is Your Black World.
Until we meet again, please stay strong, be blessed and be educated.
