“Bebop lives! This primal hipster (he was one of the cats who followed Bird around with a wire recorder) has never quit touring or recording… His credits as a singer/songwriter/piano-man are as impressive as his vocal style, ranging from the vocalese classic “Yardbird Suite” to “I’m Hip” (a collaboration with Dave Frishberg), “Blue Xmas” (the dark, cynical Christmas song he wrote for Miles) and, god help us, Multiplication Rock…” (Michael Goodwin)

Both established artists on the international jazz scene, their double-duo covers new terrain with a fresh take on standards, poetry and original songs.

Downbeat says, “Judy Niemack is one of the best, and purest jazz singers ever. She has a disciplined improvisational gift that makes her scat-sung lines music…and puts over a tune with passion and singular phrasing…Classy.”
“Jay Clayton is one of the most phenomenal vocalists in creative improvised music.” (All Music Guide).

They will be joined by the “exceptionally eloquent and expressive guitarist” (Jazz Times),  Jeanfrançois Prins, and Jay Anderson, whose “bass frolics, romps, bounces and strides with impeccable precision” (Houston Chronicle).

Beth Hart
Friday, June 20 @ 8pm

The story of Beth Hart is one of extreme highs and extreme lows, and there are two particular factors that illustrate this.  First, her voice:  when she sings, clocks stop, hearts dance, and neck-hair tingles, it’s that compelling.  The second is her rollercoaster story:  in the late 90s, she was on the cusp of a promising music career, signed to a major U.S. label, national television bookings, hit singles, and great press, but her career careened off the tracks at its peak due to her drug and alcohol addiction.  Beth Hart’s story is one of incredible opportunity, heartbreaking loss, and now, with her recent show-stopping Kennedy Center Honors performance with Jeff Beck that honored blues great Buddy Guy, redemption. In 2013 Hart teamed up with guitar sensation Joe Bonamassa and together they released the Grammy-nominated album, Seesaw, which features Hart’s powerhouse blues-rock vocals and Bonamassa’s heavy guitar licks. Hart was also nominated for a Blues Music Award in the Best Contemporary Blues Female Artist category for her 2013 solo album, Bang Bang Boom Boom.

Livingston, NJ 07039

Please email egilbert@newarka.edu to purchase tickets or to make a donation.
You can also call the Newark Academy bookstore at 973-992-700 x428.

A note from the director,

The Evening of Jazz has been an annual concert at Newark Academy to showcase it’s numerous jazz ensembles.  This year our three featured musicians will be tenor saxophonist, Tim Ries a member of the Rolling Stones touring band, trombonist, Andre Hayward formerly with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the winner of the Thelonious Monk Competition in 2003 and the talented vocalist Monica Lynk Anderson.

Please take a look at the links below of our guest musicians and Jimmy Greene’s CBS letter to himself.

All proceeds will go directly to the families of Sandy Hook and to the Ana Grace Fund.  Ana Grace Marquez-Greene was one of the children killed in the Newtown shootings.  Her parents, Jimmy and Nelba are dear friends of mine that go back to my college years. Our contributions as a school and a jazz community will continue to support the families of Newtown as they work to support each other and in their efforts to prevent the causes of gun violence.  It is fitting to honor Ana’s memory with music, as she was musically gifted.  In our efforts to raise funds for this worthy cause, we hope you can join us on April 11th for this special evening of music.

Thank you,

Julius Tolentino

Aout Trevor Gordon Hall

From the outskirts of Philadelphia PA, Trevor is an acoustic instrumentalist whose compositions range in style from driving rhythms to soft melodic phrases.  Trevor caught the eye of 9 time Grammy winning producer Joe Nicolo (James Taylor, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, etc.), who produced two of Trevor’s releases entitled “Finding My Way” and “Let Your Heart Be Light”.  These releases garnered high reviews and gave Trevor such opportunities as recording with bass virtuoso Michael Manring as well as continuing to share the stage with artists such as Pat Martino, Phil Keaggy, Don Ross, Andy Mckee, Alex Skolnick, The California Guitar Trio, Billy Cobham etc.  Trevor has collaborated with various builders to redesign an instrument called the kalimba, which mounts to the surface of the guitar.  Compositions inspired by the pairing of the two instruments can be heard in Trevor’s Candyrat Records debut “Entelechy”.  Upon its release, this album climbed the iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts, as well as YouTube Top Commented/Top Favorited/Most Discussed categories with the release of videos.  His music has been featured on various national radio stations including NPR and television networks including NBC.  Trevor performs throughout the USA, Canada, and Europe.

“…In the genre of intriguing guitar players Trevor really stands out. His music is both soothing and challenging…”
Graham Nash – Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and well known member of the group Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

“…Creative imagination resides, as well as flourishes within certain artists, and it certainly does so in Trevor Gordon Hall. Ingenuity is something that always causes surprise, and this gentleman’s abilities are totally exceptional…”
Pat Martino – Legendary Jazz Guitarist

“…Trevor is very skilled…his compositions are beautiful, atmospheric, open and heartfelt…I admire him very much…”
Tommy Emmanuel, Award Winning guitar virtuoso

Free Jazz Guitar Lessons From Chuck Loeb

Former Stan Getz and current Fourplay Guitarist, Chuck Loeb, is launching an online school this month with ArtistWorks.  Not only does Chuck simplify jazz improv through a full library of online video lessons, but you’ll be able to submit practice videos for Chuck to review and give you personalized video feedback.

We’ve put together three sample video lessons and a “Video Exchange™” between Chuck and one of his students so you can get a taste of Chuck’s amazing new online school.

One of the cornerstones of Chuck’s method is called the “The Six Positions” and it is among these four free lessons!

To put it simply, “The Six Positions” are a way to simplify the neck of the guitar into 6 different hand patterns (shapes) for playing the same scale. So why would you need to know the Major Scale in 6 Positions? Basically it’s about knowing how to find any note on the neck, in any key. Chuck’s method boils a vast and complicated subject down to 6 Positions. These 6 Positions serve as a guide to help you memorize all the notes in a certain area, which will help you find the right note in any key, anywhere on the neck.

The curriculum in the new Online Jazz Guitar School with Chuck Loebcontains individual lessons that break down each of the 6 Shapes into much greater detail, but the free sample lesson focuses on why these 6 Shapes are so important to establish a foundation for playing jazz guitar.

Click here to get “The Six Positions” and three other lessons free. If you’d like to sign up for Chuck’s new online school, we’re offering 10% off if you pre-order before April 16th. Thanks to Chuck and ArtistWorks’ Video Exchange platform, you can get personalized feedback from a master player and finally become the jazz guitarist you always wanted to be.

Part of the NYC Frankie Trifecta celebrating Frankie Manning’s 100th Birthday.

Frankie Manning, legendary Lindy Hop dancer, born in 1914, was raised, lived and danced most of his life in New York City, passing away just before his 95th Birthday.  From May 16-May 26, 2014, New York City plays host to his 100th Birthday Celebration.  The Celebration has attracted dancers from all over the world, many of whom learned from him at Sweden’s Herrang Dance Camp and dance events worldwide. Above, from his cover photograph, Life Magazine in 1941, W. Eugene Smith.
The Producers. Zort Music (Alan Sugarman) and Prohibition Productions  (Patrick Soluri).

Alan Sugarman was the producer in 1999 of Frankie’s 85th Birthday Celebration at Roseland Ballroom, attracting 1800 dancers on one dance floor, with Frankie, for his birthday.

The New York Times in a March 27, 2014 Article on the Closing of Roseland Ballroom (photo above) noted the 1999 event as one of the most memorable Roseland Events in the last 25 years:

“1999 Frankie Manning, known as the Pied Piper of the Lindy Hop, danced with 85 successive partners at the Roseland Ballroom to celebrate his 85th birthday. It was satisfying, said Alan Sugarman, a producer of that event, since, in 1935, Mr. Manning had been excluded from the hall because he was black. “In 1999, Roseland apologized and put Frankie’s dance shoes on their wall of fame,” he said.”

The video of the gracious 1999 apology from Roseland has just been posted at YouTube:

Prohibition Productions and The Salon (Patrick Soluri) have been producing popular lounge and swing events since 2001 at the Player’s Club, the Edison Ballroom, the Empire Hotel, and the Copacabana.
