Groove is the universal language. Whether it’s a Texas or Chicago blues shuffle, James Brown’s goodfoot funk, a driving guaguanco, percolating rumba, surging samba, infectious second line or insinuating cha-cha-cha, everyone knows what to do when they feel the rhythm in their bones. Indeed, groove is at the heart of this potent Afro Bop Alliance release, the group’s debut on the ZOHO label. While providing exciting Latin-tinged grooves that are tailor-made for dancers, the members of this Washington, DC-based, Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers-inspired octet keep one foot solidly in the straight ahead jazz camp with their scintillating improvisations and tight three-horn frontline on Angel Eyes. The secret weapon on this exhilarating outing is newest Afro Bop Alliance member Victor Provost, who brings a new sparkle to the proceedings with his virtuosic steel pans playing on the Latin Grammy-winning group’s fifth release overall. “He’s like the Michael Brecker of the pans,” says drummer and Afro Bop Alliance founder Joe McCarthy. “He’s from St. John’s, Virgin Islands, and he came to study at George Mason University just outside of Washington D.C., where I also teach. Having Victor in the band really changes what we do.” Aside from offering brilliant solos throughout Angel Eyes, Provost’s steel pans also blend nicely on the frontline with alto saxophonist Vince Norman, tenor saxophonist Luis Hernandez and trumpeter Tim Stanley on these eleven tracks. They state their rhythmically-charged case very persuasively from the outset on the buoyantly churning, clave-fueled opener, The Jinx, written by the band’s bassist Tom Baldwin and arranged by Vince Norman. Following exhilarating solos by pianist Harry Appelman and saxophonist Hernandez, drummer McCarthy engages in some fiery exchanges with conga player Roberto Quintero over a mesmerizing son montuno groove on this energized number before McCarthy unleashes at the tag. Three for Juju, composed by Hernandez and arranged by Norman, opens with a drum flurry by McCarthy. Note how he keeps a tambourine groove going with his foot as he traverses the kit throughout this intricate piece, which morphs from 3/4 to 6/8 and features some lush harmonies between the horns. “That’s based on a joropo groove from Venezuela,” explains McCarthy,” who studied Latin jazz rhythms with Frankie Malabe and Victor Rendon at the Boys Harbor School in the Bronx and also studied jazz drumming with Ed Soph at the University of North Texas. “I was trying to play a little wider beat, so it seems to float underneath that beautiful melody that Luis wrote. And the way that Roberto is playing maracas on that is a total characteristic of that type of groove.” Appelman and Hernandez both offer inspired solos on this engaging, polyrhythmic number.

Baldwin’s Ziggy the Crooner is a straight-up cha-cha-cha that showcases Provost’s steel pans in unison with Stanley’s muted trumpet. Norman, who also co-arranged the contrapuntal horn lines on this easy-grooving number, turns in a robust alto solo here. The composer adds a nimble upright bass solo on the insinuating cha-cha groove before the rhythm section shifts to 12/8 mode underneath trumpeter Stanley’s bristling solo. And dig the sizzling timbales-conga exchanges between McCarthy and Quintero over the son montuno section at the tag. “Roberto is a magnificent percussionist, a very powerful player and great soloist,” says McCarthy of his Afro Bop Alliance rhythm mate.

Pianist-arranger Appelman puts an inventive Latin jazz spin on Horace Silver’s lovely 5/4 tune Barbara (from his 1975 Silver ‘n Brass album) which features a heroic tenor solo from Hernandez (catch his sly quote from “Fascinating Rhythm” along the way). Provost’s Homenaje which features some lively call-and-response exchanges with special guest Paquito D’Rivera on clarinet, also has Quintero elevating the proceedings with his fiery conga work.

Vocalist Sara Jones delivers a darkly evocative reading of “Nature Boy,” which is given a 3/4 treatment by Norman and is enhanced by the lush strings of violinist (and Joe McCarthy’s wife) Paula McCarthy and principal cellist Suzanne Orban with the St. Claire Chamber Strings. The octet next tackles Joe Henderson’s challenging Inner Urge which is given a percolating new clave-fueled arrangement by Norman. McCarthy explodes with a drums salvo at the intro while Hernandez and Provost contribute outstanding solos on this decidedly Latinized rendition of a jazz classic.

Provost’s Fete Antilles has the gifted steel pans player doubling the melody with trumpeter Stanley upfront before the other horns join in. Stanley, Provost and Appelman contribute stirring solos on this polyrhythmic groover. Appelman’s clave-fueled reworking of the evocative jazz standard Angel Eyes features brilliant solo contributions from trumpeter Stanley and tenor saxophonist Hernandez and builds to another spirited McCarthy-Quintero face-off against an invigorating son montuno groove set up by Appelman’s piano.

Dan Cavanagh’s Latin spin on Wayne Shorter’s This Is For Albert, a classic Jazz Messengers tune introduced on 1963‘s Caravan, has McCarthy deftly shifting from alternating measures of 12/8 and 9/8 to 3/4 on the bridge throughout the course of the piece. “I envisioned a compound time signature on that because it allows it to breathe and go in a different direction than if it had stayed in four all the time,” says groovemeister McCarthy. Stanley turns in another forcefully swinging trumpet solo on this number and is followed in succession by Norman, who effortlessly soars over the entrancing groove on alto sax.

The album closes on a vibrant note with Provost’s upbeat, soca flavored Minor Details which features both Sara Jones and the composer on wordless vocals and has Appelman switching to electric piano for a fresh texture. Norman and Provost each stretch out considerably on this buoyant vehicle.

With Angel Eyes, McCarthy and his spirited crew continue in the great tradition of cross-fertilization pioneered by Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo and carried on by Latin jazz masters like Machito, Mario Bauza, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Mongo Santamaria, Ray Barretto, Chico and Arturo O’Farrill, Chucho Valdes, Poncho Sanchez, Jerry and Andy Gonzalez and countless other practitioners of this infectious groove-oriented music. And the key is the chemistry between the band members.

“The combinations of players…that’s where the magic happens,” says McCarthy. “You have guys who are coming from very different places, but everybody understands what’s going on. And that, to me, is what makes this music happen. Everybody knows how everybody in the band plays and also knows what everybody’s into and what they’re listening to, so when we come together there’s usually very little discussion about anything. We just play. Someone will bring in an arrangement and the music will come together very quickly. And that’s what I think makes this music happening.”
That formula has proven successful in four previous outings, including their 2008 Latin Grammy-winning collaboration with Dave Samuels’ Caribbean Jazz Project on Afro Bop Alliance – which also received a Grammy nomination that same year. And it fuels this current outing, their most ebullient and rhythmically-charged album to date.

NJMH, in collaboration with Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, continues its annual summer Latin Jazz Jam concert series with Nelson Gonzales All Stars on Long Island Sound in Pelham Bay Park.

Born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, Nelson González is distinguished for his mastery of the Cuban Tres guitar. This traditional instrument is indispensable to the interpretation of ‘Son’, the most popular form of Cuban dance music .His love of Afro-Caribbean music developed at an early age and was nurtured in New York City, where he immigrated at the age of 12. During the 1960’s many of today’s acclaimed and virtuoso Latin musicians convened regularly at the home of Andy and Jerry Gonzalez to participate in weekly ‘jam sessions’. Nelson joined these young and notable musicians that included talents such as Dave Valentin, Hilton Ruiz, Oscar Hernandez, Milton Cardona, Nicki Marrero, Tommy Lopez, Jr., Eladio Perez, Charlie Santiago, Papo Vasquez, Orestes Vilato, and the powerful voices of Adalberto Santiago, Willie Garcia, Justo Betancourt and Virgilio Marti. It was during this period that Nelson explored his interest in the Tres.

Coming in September

We are happy to announce our next exhibit opening in our Visitors Center – the life and times of Bebo Valdes, the innovative and influential pianist/composer/ bandleader and father of Chucho Valdes.

A distinguished curatorial team that includes historian/writers Rene Lopez and Ned Sublette have been creating what we are positive will be an extraordinary exhibit. Also curating is the expert Robert Sancho, from Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, which is sponsoring the exhibit.

Come see our current exhibition
‘Ralph Ellison: A Man and His Records’
Open from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday in the Jazz Museum’s Visitors Center
104 E. 126th Street, Suite 2c

Please come see our new Ralph Ellison exhibit, which has received rave notices in The New Yorker and listings in The New York Times. Based on the museum’s acquisition of the recordings that Ellison listened to while he wrote his masterpieces (including Invisible Man), the exhibit blends the music and the albums with his words, presented in thrilling and creative visual juxtapositions. As you listen to the music in the exhibit, it is as though you are visiting with Ellison as he is writing. In addition, our interactive kiosk offers rare videos of Ellison, along with interviews created especially for the exhibit with scholars such as Stanley Crouch.

From Richard Brody in The New Yorker:

One of the greatest American novelists, Ralph Ellison, is also one of our greatest writers about music, as evidenced by the volume « Living with Music, » which collects his writings about jazz. Ellison’s life with music is thrust to the fore by a noteworthy exhibit that just opened at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, « Ralph Ellison: A Man and His Records, » on the occasion of his centennial (with an asterisk: his biographer, Arnold Rampersad, gives Ellison’s birth date as March 1, 1913). Ellison, who died in 1994, was a big collector of jazz records-indeed, of records of many kinds of music. The museum has acquired his collection, which is the centerpiece of the exhibit.

To capture the appeal and the delight of the show, with its selection of citations from Ellison’s work and evocative archival images, it’s worth glancing at just how Ellison lived with music….

‘Jazz: The Experimenters,’ a 1965 television broadcast of performances by the bands of Cecil Taylor and Charles Mingus, with commentary by Ralph Ellison and the jazz critic Martin Williams, currently on view at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem as part of an exhibition devoted to Ellison’s record collection, would be worth the trip, even in the absence of the enticing and evocative installation of artifacts, texts, and images that surrounds it. The broadcast is a major document in the contextualized history of jazz and its performance.

Noshir Mody Quartet, Live Performance – Saturday Aug 9th at 9pm
SOMETHIN’ Jazz Club
212 E. 52nd St. 3Fl.
New York, NY 10022
—————————-
Noshir Mody is a stimulating and creative fusion guitarist displaying a beautiful tone, versatility, and inventive ideas on his picturesque originals. Throughout his career, Mody has recorded consistently rewarding and thought-provoking sets of original music. His recent Stories From The Years Of Living Passionately features five of his sophisticated compositions performed by a quintet also including Tsuyoshi Niwa on soprano saxophone, pianist Carmen Staaf, bassist John Lenis and drummer Yutaka Uchida. On Stories From The Years Of Living Passionately, the musicians stretch out on the songs, with only one piece being under 11 minutes long, yet they make every moment count. Their performances are as colorful as the song titles, which include “The Next Chapter,” “India,” and “A Pearl Discovers The Oyster.” Mody’s guitar playing, while occasionally recalling Gabor Szabo and Pat Metheny, is quite distinctive, thoughtful and unpredictable. Niwa and Staaf also have plenty of solo space and the high quality of the improvisations and the grooves always hold on to one’s attention. Whether it is the peaceful but danceable “To Be In Your Thoughts,” the pretty melody of “Beckoned By Mercury” or the 5/4 groove of “A Pearl Discovers The Oyster,” every selection on this CD will be of strong interest to modern jazz fans. The music brings out the best in the musicians and vice versa, resulting in a particularly memorable set.Born and raised in Bombay, India, Noshir Mody was self-taught on guitar. He had an original and unique conception to playing jazz from the start. His early inspirations included Indian classical music, Al Di Meola’s Elegant Gypsy, music from Bollywood, rock and the modern jazz guitar masters. Mody immersed himself in jazz after moving to New York in 1995, leading his own trio in clubs. His eclectic and open-minded approach to music was well showcased in his groups the EthniFusion Rock Ensemble and the EthniFusion Jazz Ensemble.Noshir Mody’s solo guitar recording In This World With You and his trio set Union Of Hearts displayed both his memorable originals and his impressionistic playing. Now with the release of Stories From The Years Of Living Passionately, a project that features his compositions interpreted by a top-notch quintet, Noshir Mody’s musical vision is fully realized.

What’s all the fuss about?

Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange, Review by Mark S. Tucker
« …High art, as far as I’m concerned, one of the year’s stand-out cuts [A Pearl Discovers The Oyster] so far, within a CD that doesn’t brazenly demand re-listening but instead seduces. You’ll be tossing it into the player again and again without even realizing it. »

JazzTimes, Review by Scott Albin
« …Niwa’s solo features his full-bodied soprano timbre, fresh ideas, and logical flow. Mody’s improv reveals Indian influences and nimble constructs and runs in the manner of Pat Metheny. Staaf once more plunges deeply into the tune’s harmonies, with tantalizing lines and impactful chordal sequences, graced by Mody’s delicate enhancements. Lenis and Uchida maintain separate yet cohesive rhythmic streams that are again not to be overlooked… »

Jazz Weekly, Review by George W. Harris
« …A piece such as “The Next Chapter” flows like a stream for nine minutes, while on the sixteen minute “India” Mody has his guitar chords chime like bells and Uchida’s cymbals sashay the groove along like a spring breeze. A delicate ride cymbal taps along during “A Pearl Discovers the Oyster” and Mody’s solo beams across like a rainbow at sunset, just before the panoramic “To Be In Your Thoughts” closes this journey with optimistic notes of joy. As fresh and cleansing as a summer rain! »

Acid Dragon Magazine, Review by Phil Jackson
« Self-taught Bombay guitarist Noshir Mody has assembled a magnificent array of musicians to record a deeply personal, sonically rich and beautifully produced album… »

Improvijazzation Nation Magazine, Review by Rotcod Zzaj
« …This is surely the direction jazz is headed for in the 21st Century & beyond…. my personal favorite of the 5 (long) tracks offered up was the stunningly pervasive opener, “The Next Chapter“… waves of passion will invade your thoughts and bring you the peace that only jazz can bring… »

Midwest Record, Review by Chris Spector
« …Whatever you’ve ever dug is in the mix here from Shakti to smooth jazz to Paul Horn to Paul Winter to Pall Mall. Kicking it out with a quartet of like minded pros on a mission to serve it right and tight, Mody is out to make the world a smaller place. First rate stuff that sounds like world beat for a nu generation of jazzbos… »

Blogcritics.org, Review by Jack Goodstein
« …If expressive melodies and harmonies can be said to serve as metaphors for that moment of inspiration, Mody’s music makes the case. The album is the pudding’s proof… »

JSITop21, Review by John Shelton Ivany
« …Behind his guitar the sound is youthful and loving, and we are treated to a great mix of impressive musicianship. »

Scott Yanow, author of 11 books including The Great Jazz Guitarists, The Jazz Singers, Jazz On Film and Jazz On Record 1917-76
« A top-notch jazz and fusion guitarist, Noshir Mody composes picturesque originals that are impossible to classify as anything but high-quality modern jazz… »
