Artists Celebrate the Incomparable Nanci Griffith with Tribute Record More Than a Whisper: Celebrating The Music Of Nanci Griffith Out Sept. 22

More Than A Whisper: Celebrating The Music Of Nanci Griffith is an all-star tribute to the legacy of the GRAMMY award-winning singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Featured artists include Brandy Clark, Shawn Colvin, Iris Dement, Steve Earle, Mary Gauthier, Emmylou Harris, Sarah Jarosz, Lyle Lovett and Kathy Mattea, Ida Mae, John Prine, and Kelsey Waldon, Todd Snider, Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle, Aaron Lee Tasjan, and The War And Treaty covering some of Griffith’s most notable releases.

Many of the songs chosen for the album were revisited and reimagined by Griffith throughout her career, while several selections became memorable hits for others. What is most evident in these latest iterations, however, is the timeless appeal of Griffith’s work.

The CD and LP are available for preorder now, with the digital preorder launching on July 14.

“The Weakness” as an Ethereal Duet

Ruston Kelly unveiled a new version of “The Weakness”, reinterpreted as an atmospheric duet with singer-songwriter Samia.

“Samia brings that special infinity vibe,” said Kelly. “It’s like this familiar yet incredibly unique energy in everything I’ve heard her do. After hearing her sing, I became an instant fan. There wasn’t anyone other than her that I wanted to help me deconstruct ‘The Weakness’ and mold it into something new – something more haunting, and with a whole other emotional perspective. When we were in the studio, I found myself copying her interpretation of my phrasing, which added this cool synergy to us singing the song together.”

As soon as the Frozemode boys heard it they were buzzing and started writing their verses. The energy in the room for that session was crazy, all six of us were just bouncing off the walls with excitement listening to what we were creating. The Great Escape festival was a few days later and we were both playing so we said we’ve gotta perform it together. They came on during our set and we went on during theirs and playing it live got us gassed for releasing it.“ – NOISY

Logan Ledger’s “Ripple” Pays Loving
Tribute to His Bay Area Roots

Logan Ledger has released his new single, a heartfelt and deeply nostalgic cover of the beloved Grateful Dead standard “Ripple.”

Ledger has been working with producer Shooter Jennings on the follow-up to his acclaimed self-titled debut, which was released in April 2020. As Ledger explains, “Ripple” came together rather spontaneously during a recent recording session.

“I’ve long been a fan of the songs of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. To me, Robert Hunter is basically the poet laureate of Marin County or something. ‘Ripple’ is, of course, one of the Dead’s best-known songs, and it has a kind of archaic zen folk mystery to it that I dig,” says Ledger. “I had been playing it with my friends Sam Grisman and Ric Robertson for a series of shows out in California.”

He recalls, “When it came time to make the record with Shooter, we were at Sunset one day and I just started playing around with it in the vocal booth. Shooter was like ‘we should record that,’ and I agreed that would be a fine idea—real spontaneous like that. I’m very fond of the recording we made together—the way Shooter’s piano weaves in gracefully just for that one little section, Nick Bockrath’s tremolo part which evokes David Grisman’s mandolin on the original, Russ Pahl’s blanket of hippie steel, Frank Rische’s beautiful harmony. It reminds me of home.”

“Mending Song” is the follow-up to Kelly’s first single from the record, “The Weakness,” which was released last month. Threaded with sweetly ethereal tones sculpted through producer/songwriter/multi-
instrumentalist Nate Mercereau’s use of guitar-based synth, “Mending Song” was built from a voice-note demo recorded in Kelly’s L.A. hotel room, amplifying its unfettered emotion to sublime effect. “You can hear the dryer running in the background, but there’s something really special about the feel of that recording,” says Kelly.
