Manny Charlton is best known as being in the band NAZARETH but his career did not start there nor is that the focus of this article. We are going to explore the life of Manny quite differently than most have done as he candidly gave us an exclusive accounting of his rise to fame and how he has explored his musical diversity throughout his 40+ years as a musician! In this recorded interview there were some startling facets of his life that have come to light and will be exciting to both Nazareth and Manny Charlton fans. I am in both awe of having this opportunity to share and am quite honored to have been given the opportunity to write this article under his guidance and permission. Exploring the life of a musician that has achieved the pinnacle of success that Manny has reached is indeed a thrill. Please join Rock and Roll Magazine at taking a look at Manny’s life in retrospection, quite an endeavor, indeed. No doubt, Manny would love to be on top and gain his notoriety back and frankly we think he will, especially when you see who Manny has in his band, now!

Manny’s ability to perform and his numerous hits have given him a fan base that still follows his every movement and collects all that he does, to those Baby Boomers we give a big salute. Building a fan base with the younger generation, the new wave of rockers is another matter, but, Rock and Roll is here to stay!! You will see as we go deeper into the mindset of the superstar that he is a calculating and smart business minded rocker that understands what is happening and is with the times as well as ahead of it.

Manny is constantly thinking about what is going to propel him back into the hearts of the followers that have stood by him through all of his incarnations and how to bring a new legion of fans to his events and to buy his music, after all, he is a legend that plays with legends.

The audio tape I am working from is of Manny giving an account through the years of his musical career, he has a very strong Scottish accent that he acquired from his emigration from Spain to Dunfermline, Scotland as a child of 2 years old, in 1943. No doubt, like other children trying to find themselves, Manny sought out music as his outlet and joined a series of bands that included; Mark 5, the Red Hawks and The Shadettes which became the world renowned band, NAZARETH. I can remember Nazareth as though they were performing yesterday, brilliant pieces of choreographed music. In fact, bands I work with are still thrilled to perform their songs and their fans know all of the words, a testament to how many times Nazareth songs have been played on the radio. In a blues rock style that was backboned by our influential Manny on the direction of the group, they kept plugging away at reaching the US market with some exceptional music, most slipped by, but when the music stuck, it stuck hard and the band was extremely tight during its hey-day of the 1970’s and people are still talking about the performances of Nazareth during their tours with Deep Purple and the Moody Blues. True success came when Nazareth became the headliner and Manny Charlton stepped up next to Dan McCafferty to back up his vocals with his guitar licks. As Manny states in his interview, he wanted a new direction for the band and took on the role as Producer from Roger Glover of Deep Purple and targeted the music for the Grand Prize, the USA music buying public and concert going rockers. Rock and Roller’s were ready to buy and what happened is Platinum Rock history with over 2,000,000 copies of HAIR OF THE DOG and their biggest hit song “Love Hurts”, that song is the record holder on the Norwegian Chart. The LP of Dan McCafferty was Produced by Manny, another work in the Manny Charlton portfolio of 5 albums.

Life After Nazareth For Manny Charlton

Manny chose to leave Nazareth in 1990 and went back to his roots in the Scottish circuit, playing bars and performing his own music with the Nazareth songs included and began work on his first solo album Drool on the Red Steel record label which came out in 1997 featuring Neil Miller on vocals. In 1998, Manny came to the Unites States and landed in Texas and built the Manny Charlton Band and with this group they released Stonkin’ and Klone This and that group disbanded in 2003. In 2004, Manny, relentless in his pursuit to create music released Say The Word on River Records, a Scottish label. Going to what people that come to hear most often in the bar and club scene, Manny devoted his next two albums to cover songs in 2005 in Sharp and Sharp Re-Loaded. The frontman, singer, vocalist is key to making a band survive, always what Manny needed to make things happen and draw fans to his projects and in 2006 his career made another turn as he joined a band, rather than build one, that brought him to the rock band From Behind with Nicky Moore on vocals and they toured Europe and produced Game Over for their fans, but again Manny went back to his solo career and in 2007 with the USA now in his blood, he released the album Americana Deluxe and again covered the classics.

Manny had an interesting song that he thought could be incorporated in the burgeoning game market, so, he sent it to id Software, the creator of Doom and John Romero gave it the name Blood on the Walls and now Manny had a niche in the game world.
