KK Martin at the Kern River Rock n Blues Festival
OC Blues News – Hey K.K., I hope all is well with you…Give all our loyal readers and peeps an update with what’s been going on with you in your music world these dayz.
KK – I’m working constantly; a steady stream of house gigs as well as bookings at festivals and recording sessions, shooting video and working on a new record
OC Blues News  – Please tell our readers what your high school years were like, what music did you and your friends listen to, and what was the musical soundtrack you recall to sum up your senior year in High school.
KK -I wasn’t there, I wasn’t at high school, I was busy playing music. My High School years were a blast but I spent more time playing music than being in school. My mom and dad were both musicians and kept me gainfully employed if not an indentured servant. We listened to everything that we could, stuff that was on the radio, stuff that we didn’t even want to listen to and to this day snippets of tv shows and commercials will sometimes subconsciously surface in my playing. Rock n roll was the soundtrack for my High School years, I have pretty big ears and therefore a pretty wide listening palette, I would say that 90% of being a musician is learning how to listen.
OC Blues News – First big question… Why the Guitar?
KK – My mom and dad were both guitar players, I had one as a bath toy when I was an infant. Although I started out my professional career as a drummer because that’s what my mom and dad needed in their band.
OC Blues News – Ok, Now for your music … What is the name of the current Album you are promoting at the moment? How did the music come about? (if no album, you can talk about other current musical projects, etc)
KK – Naked Blues Vol. II. It was an answer to Naked Blues Vol. I in which I tried to concentrate on more traditional Delta blues. On Vol. II I tried to examine the influence Delta Blues had on rock n’ roll artists. I have a new album in the works that goes in a different direction but you’ll have to watch me on Reverbnation or Facebook to track the details!
OC Blues News – What projects / recordings are you working on at the moment?
KK – I just finished playing on Tricia Freemans  (http://www.triciafreemanband.com) new record; “Everyone Can See”, I did a recording with Chris Whynaught, I just recorded with Baba Elefante, Frank Cotinolo from the Missiles of October. I am currently in the process of writing material for my new CD. I finished recording pedal steel and mandolin on Scott Sechman’s (http://sechman.com/Home.html) new album; “Scott Sechman”.
OC Blues News – What musical gear and endorsements to you have and why?
KK – I am a CF Martin Preferred Artist, Cream T Pickups, Onori Guitar Straps, Stage Ninja, G7th Capos and Jewelry by Isis all endorse me. I really believe in the products, they do a great job for me and the close relationships I have with these companies allow me to consider it an honor to have a relationship with these guys.
OC Blues News – What kind of Guitar Effects do you use ?
KK – All old school Boss Stomp boxes for my electric rig except for the Univide, I run the Bad Cat pre amp in front of everything. My favorite effect is a really nice guitar and amplifier.
OC Blues News – How many hours a week does it take to put this (your band, writing your music, family, a job maybe) all together for the listening and reading masses?
KK – Every waking hour that I can muster and I’m honored to spend one of them with you.
OC Blues News – So K.K., what are you listening to allot of these days?
KK – News Radio and any music I am required to learn for work. I try to absorb as much “new music”  (if there is such a thing) as possible.
OC Blues News – Name some folks you would love to get on the same album or share the stage with… Inquiring minds want to know…
KK – So many idols, so little time
OC Blues News – I also don’t want to forget this… Tell us about any other things you may be in involved in or any special interest besides music that is close to  your heart …?
KK – I am working with a school called Rockstars of Tomorrow and I work with the OCBS doing Blues in the Schools. I also have a radio show on KOCI.FM
OC Blues News – Lastly, please give our readers one last parting shot across the bow… What is Guitarist K.K. Martin going to be doing in 5 years?
KK – Snorkeling in Belize, but seriously I’m sure I’ll be playing somewhere.
OC Blues News – We would like to thank you for your time and candor with my loyal readers and keep on fighting the good fight to bring us some quality guitar oriented music.
KK – The pleasure is mine and I’ll keep my gun oiled you keep your powder dry
