Angélique Kidjo Receives the 2023 Polar
Music Prize

The Polar Music Prize 2023 was awarded to Angélique Kidjo last month. Marie Ledin, managing director of the Polar Music Prize, said: “Angélique Kidjo is an inspirational artist, she constantly explores and challenges and is one of the greatest singer-songwriters in international music. We are thrilled to be recognising her talent and shining a light on her important work with the Batonga Foundation.

On receiving the award in the same year as Chris Blackwell, who signed Angélique to Island Records in the eighties, Angélique said that her life “was changed overnight.” She added: “I had sent my music to every record company in Paris. No one was interested, no one cared. Then the African activist Mamadou Konté sent it to someone in Jamaica who showed true passion for my work, signed me right away and started me down the path to success. This person was Chris Blackwell. He has allowed me to build these bridges between all the beautiful music and peoples of the world, so that we can celebrate our common humanity.”

The ceremony and banquet took place at The Grand Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden. It featured musical performances by Swedish artists, including Daniela Rathana singing “Pull Up To The Bumper” by Island Records artist Grace Jones, and Deportees covered U2’s “With Or Without You”. Benjamin Ingrosso sang “Wild World” with Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens watching on, while Anna Ternheim performed “Love Is The Drug” with Phil Manzanrera seated in the audience. Ysee gave a rendition of Angelique Kidjo’s “Agolo”, and the S:t Jacobs Camber Choir performed “The Deer’s Cry” by Arvo Pärt.

The Polar Music Prize was founded in 1989 by the late Stig “Stikkan” Anderson, a legend in the history of Swedish music and publisher, lyricist and manager of ABBA, to celebrate excellence in music. Stig Anderson believed that music was equally as important to society as, for example, science, medicine and literature, and should have a prize to reflect this.

Previous recipients of the Polar Music Prize include Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Chuck Berry, Ennio Morricone, Led Zeppelin, Patti Smith, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kronos Quartet, Joni Mitchell, Elton John, Metallica, Iggy Pop, Ravi Shankar, Renée Fleming, Miriam Makeba, Wayne Shorter, Sofia Gubaidulina and many more.

Angélique Kidjo to Receive the Polar Music Prize 2023

The Polar Music Prize 2023 is awarded to Angélique Kidjo from Benin. A unique and unstoppable artist and songwriter. Angélique Kidjo speaks and sings in five languages: Fon, French, Yorùbá, Goun and English. Angélique grew up in Cotonou, surrounded by the dynamic Beninese culture and listening to music from all over the world: soul, jazz, reggae, afrobeat, pop, classical. When a communist dictatorship tried to silence her, she moved to Paris and became even more active. Angélique Kidjo invented the word batonga, a response to those who think girls don’t belong in schools, and runs the Batonga Foundation, which seeks out girls and provides them with education. Bono has said of her, “In Africa’s new morning, Angélique Kidjo is the warmth of the rising sun”.

Marie Ledin, managing director of the Polar Music Prize, said: “We are delighted to honour these three Laureates who have all made such a global impact with their music. Angélique Kidjo is an inspirational artist, she constantly explores and challenges and is one of the greatest singer-songwriters in international music. We are thrilled to be recognising her talent and shining a light on her important work with the Batonga Foundation.

On being awarded the Polar Music Prize, Angélique Kidjo said: “My passion for music has always been unwavering. Being on stage for me is like being in paradise – it’s my sanctuary. It’s my place to link and to connect with my fellow human beings. That is something that I’m grateful for every day.

“To be awarded the Polar Music Prize is humbling. I have no words to say how important this is for me. It comes with a sense of responsibility that is bestowed upon me as an artist to continue to do great work. I will do my best to be a proud recipient of the Prize through my work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, on behalf of the children, and as an ambassador of music, to help create a world in which we can all live in peace.Thank you so much for making me part of this prestigious Prize, in such prestigious company.”

“Mother Nature,” Angelique Kidjo’s newest album out now!

My new album, “Mother Nature” is out now! This album is a love letter to Mother Earth and all the values we hold dear: truth, trust, love, connection. If there’s anything the pandemic has taught us, it’s that we are all a part of the same ecosystem—this planet is all we have. I am very grateful to have so many guests joining me of the album: Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi, Salif Keita, Shungudzo, Sampa The Great, GhettoBoy, EarthGang, ZEYNAB, Matthieu, Chedid, – M – Lionel Loueke, and many more! I am also thrilled this morning to share a new song, “Africa, One Of A Kind” featuring Mr. Eazi and Salif Keita.

Angelique Named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World!

Time Magazine has named Angélique Kidjo to their list of 100 Most Influential People that was revealed today. “The grace she exudes toward her fellow creators, and to humankind, is a reflection of her vibrancy, kindness, and generosity. Angélique is as real as they come,” says Alicia Keys, in her introduction of Kidjo to the list. The acknowledgment is the latest in a series of major accolades and appearances in what has been a tremendous year for this “towering figure of cross-cultural music” (New Yorker).

In June, Kidjo released Mother Nature, her first album of original music in 7 years, to widespread international praise including features with the New York Times, Rolling Stone, NPR and beyond, and TV appearances on Amanpour and Tamron Hall. The album represents the remarkable influence that Kidjo has had on younger generations of musicians, and features collaborations with a host of budding stars including Burna Boy, Sampa The Great, Yemi Alade, Shungudzo, Ghetto Boy, Earthgang and others. Together they address a host of complex issues, from political upheaval to the destruction of the environment, that in Kidjo’s hands transform into music that is radiantly joyful. Watch the video for the title track here.

Kidjo also represented the continent of Africa during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Opening Ceremony, singing “Imagine” alongside John Legend, Alejandro Sanz and Keith Urban.

“DIGNITY” Music Video

In the spellbinding video for “Dignity,” the song’s message of spirited perseverance is portrayed in the story of a migrant longing for his homeland and struggling to survive in a climate of profound injustice.

Partly filmed in a bleak industrial landscape, the video follows the migrant as he finds self-salvation through dancing—an element perfectly captured in free-flowing yet exquisitely poignant choreography. Meanwhile, Kidjo and Alade instantly brighten the visual with their self-possessed presence, each delivering an impassioned performance that intensifies the track’s uplifting power.

New Song – “DIGNITY” feat. Yemi Alade Out Now!

Angélique joins forces with Nigerian singer Yemi Alade for a powerful new track “Dignity.” The spirited anthem was inspired by the youth-led movement to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and is accompanied by a poignant music video starring Kidjo and Alade.

“Many people think that police brutality only happens in America, but it’s everywhere,” Kidjo points out. “This song is against brutality, but it’s also about how we need to treat each other with dignity, treat nature with dignity, and treat ourselves with dignity. Because if we can’t see the dignity that Mother Nature gave to all of us, then how can we walk tall?”
