Well, the past year flew by – today is my 61st Birthday and I’ve spent most of the year reflecting and looking backwards.
Little Miss Twain took me all the way back to that little girl in Northern Ontario with the big guitar, getting into the car with my mother and driving off to wherever she had convinced somebody to let me sing that night
One of the strange and emotional things about getting older is realising that my mother only ever knew me up to the age of 22. She never met the 30-year-old me, the 40, the 50, the 60, or me now.
She is always in my thoughts, of course, but this year especially I’ve felt her threaded through so much of what I’ve been doing. Singing Little Miss Twain with Tanya Tucker, making music with people like T Bone Burnett and David Paich whose work was part of the musical world that shaped me… standing on the Wembley Stadium stage with Harry Styles… Sometimes I have to stop and think about how completely unbelievable all of this would have sounded to that little girl, or to my mother! My dream at the time was to be able to busk in the streets of Toronto, I didn’t imagine something bigger, that seemed such a leap from where I was.
Moving forward and now looking ahead I plan to be kind to myself and others. It’s what the world needs now. I want to enjoy these moments for exactly what they are and do as many new things as I can. There are still so many things I dream of I would need another 500 years to get them all done. I want to face the things that scare me and enjoy the things that please me.
My life is going to be made into a movie which I find both daunting and thrilling and that’s just one of the many things I’ve been developing in the past few years. So cheers everyone to appreciating the path behind you and the one infront of you equally. Please take a moment to listen to my album Little Miss Twain – it would mean the world to me, its my heart and soul and story all in one.
Thank you for giving me the space to change, disappear, come back, experiment and keep evolving. It is a rare thing to have people stay curious with you for this long and I don’t take it for granted.
Here’s to another year of fun, laughter and dressing up!
Love,
Shania x
